Provide an external environmental analysis of the political, economic, social and technological forces affecting Tesla in China.  Purpose The purpose of Assessment Task 1 is to undertake a strategic analysis that involves three sections: 1)     Background to the study including a brief history of Tesla; 2)     A discussion of the challenges faced by Tesla since its founding by Elon Musk; 3)    An external environmental analysis of the political, economic, social and technological forces affecting Tesla in China.   All three sections of this assessment task must have references to the strategic management academic literature from peer reviewed journals. There must be at least three references to the Subject's core text. General rules: 1. Students must demonstrate an engagement with the Body of Knowledge. This is demonstrated through the application of at least one relevant academic reference per 150 words, or a minimum of eight (8) academic references in total. 2. No article may be referenced more than twice; 3. The submission must have an introduction, a main body, a conclusion and a bibliography. Headings and sub headings may be used. 4. All three sections of this assessment task must have references to the strategic management academic literature from peer reviewed journals. 5. The item must conform with the following formatting guidelines. History of Tesla
Tesla Inc. was formerly known as Tesla motors from 2003 to 2017 is an electric automobile manufacturer based in America which was founded in 2003. The founder was Marc Tarpenning and Martin Eberhard. Tesla motors were named after Serbian American inventor Nikola Tesla.
Initially the development of Tesla motors was done for electric sports car whose funding was achieved from several sources. A great contribution was made by Elon Musk who was cofounder of PayPal, he contributes around $30 million in 2004 and served as company’s chairman.
Timeline of Tesla
Initially a 3 tiered strategy was created for creation of effective electric cars. 1st phase included release of sports car to gain return on investment. Second stage included $60,000 sedan followed by a $30,000 sedan to be sold to masses. 1st phase was released in 2008, the Tesla Roadster which was little more expensive than expected. It was being sold in the market for four years and then its manufacturing was seized further. Next phase was production of Model S car which got released in 2012. (Myles Edwin Mangram ,2012). The price of product was high starting from $74500 but it was first practical electric vehicle mass marketed. The design of Model 3 is similar but it was built to meet the needs of market, initial price was $35000 considering inflation impact. Apart from cars, company also has expanded in products associated with solar energy. In 2015, Tesla released a line of batteries so as to store solar energy in form of electric power that can be used for domestic as well as business purpose. A solar panel company named SolarCity was also bought by Tesla in 2016 and late in 2017, it renamed Tesla motors to Tesla Inc, to reflect that they don’t only sell cars.
Challenges faced by Tesla since its funding by Elon Musk
Tesla overcame several barriers to pioneer electric cars segment such as minimum viable product barrier, partnership associated barriers, scale up and innovation related barriers.
