Problem Statement
From last few years, the profitability of the company has been seen to subsequently going down. The quality of services in the Australian hotel industry has been deteriorating in various ways, one of which is the manual change of rating that is manipulation by one of the industry giants— Meriton Property Services, for which it was also fined with a large sum of AUD 3mn (CNN Travel, 2018). According to Creswell and Creswell (2017), this has been a serious concern for the management and serious steps are needed to be taken to solve this problem. It is not a good sign for the business to see such a decline in growth as well as profit in the hotel industry as the competition in the market is very high, and any loose end on the behalf can lead to loss of market at any moment.
The following are the objectives of this research –
· To understand the factors affecting the profitability of the business
· To find out the factors for which the customer reviews are getting low
The following are the research questions to find out the required information as well as to fulfil the objectives of this research –
· Hotel Industry trend
· Factors affecting the business
· Requirements of the customers
· Competitive advantage over other hotel chains
The proposed research looks forward to properly identify the reasons behind this decline in customer reviews as well as profitability through this research.
Literature Review
About Hotel Industry
The hotel industry in Australia has a great outlook as both the demand of the hotels as well as supply of hotel rooms by various hotel chains have increased significantly. As noted by Brien, Thomas and Brown (2017), from recent surveys, a growth of 1.8 % demand for the hotel rooms have been reported and on the other hand, the supply of the hotel rooms has also been increased by the market players in the hotel industry in Australia by 2 %. There has been a shortage of 0.2 % in the overall market of Australia but that is seemed to be an accommodating factor while sudden increase in demand which is good to be maintained for countries like Australia with so much of tourist attraction and beautiful places with a huge number of visitors throughout the year from different corners of the world.
According to Patiar and Mia (2015), the major cities of Australia like Hobart, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide had reported an occupancy rate of 80 % has been seen. The demand for the hotel industry is deemed to increase at a good pace in the following years as well. The investments made towards the hotel industry have performed very well over the last 10 years. The market in volatile and uncertain just like any other sector but the returns from this sector has been favourably higher than the other sectors.
Factors affecting the Business
The hospitality industry is booming in Australia with a significant growth in the demand as well as supply of hotel accommodations throughout the country. But there are lot of factors that are restricting few hotel chains from success like that. As per Turner, Way, Hodari and Witteman (2017), the following are the top factors that are affecting the hotel chain and leading to loss of goodwill resulting in decline in profits –
