Introduction
Teaching and learning are the two sides of the same picture; the methodological approach
of teaching includes the consistent involvement of the teacher with his/her students. In fact, a
continuous follow up helps a teacher to adjust with the cours
e learning outcomes especially when
the subject is like Math; the concepts of math can be easily understood and the needs of the
students can be satisfied, if the teacher adopts the formative assessment methods especially the
observation and questioning segments of formative assessment. If observation helps in building
the lesson plans for future classes though proper estimation of the strengths and weaknesses of
the students, questioning provides random check over the knowledge gained by them and it can
be diversified.
The Lesson Plan for a Mathematical Classroom with the Formative Assessment
In terms of looking how important a lesson plan in a math class can be along with
formative assessment methods, the following situation is imagined:
A class of grade first students will be taken by the math teacher and the topic of the
subject will be the addition and subtraction of the odd and even numbers. The students will be
first explained what are of numbers by letting them know that odd numbers do not get crossed by
the even numbers. They are 1 3 5 7 9 and so on while even numbers are 2 4 6 8 10 and so on.
Every odd number is followed by an even number in this numerical analysis and the students will
have observe that the series of numbers starts with an even number zero, and goes on to the odd
number as one, the two is followed as even number by three as odd number.
The class would repeat after the teacher that concept of odd and even number is that they
follow each other throughout the series of number up to the mark 100. The students will come
across this concept and the teacher will start the process of formative assessment to check
whether the students have understood the concept of odd and even numbers well. The first
technique which can be implemented in this concept is the application of the observation of the
concept explained in the classroom. There are several methods of observation which a teacher
can use to make the formative assessment of the students. The first observation is would be quite
simple; it would be giving a certain number to a volunteer selected form the students and to ask
him whether he knows about that number as odd or even. The students volunteer will be asked to
make two teams in the classroom, one finishing on an even number and the other team finishing
on the odd number.
