ASSESSMENT TASK 3: PRACTICE SELF-REFLECTION
(DISCUSSION POST AND PEER RESPONSES)
1) Discussion Post
a) Particularly interesting topics for me and things, I learnt from these
The entire unit of Public Health as well as the modules, studied within it, was of high in
terests to me and I thoroughly enjoyed studying it. However, if I were to pick only two of the concepts I learnt in it, which interested me particularly, then those would be the fundamentals of health promotion and communication in health promotion. Initially, I was not too aware of the basics related to the concept of health promotion. Before undertaking this unit, I only knew that health promotion is important for creating awareness amongst the people for better lives. As mentioned by Kokko (2014), health promotion spreads the knowledge about the significance of caring for one’s health.
However, after I studied the fundamentals, I not only found it quite an easily comprehensible concept to understand, but also highly informative in terms of the importance of the awareness being spread amongst the people that brings in the concept of common good in the society. I understood that every step and strategy undertaken to promote health in the community is a compulsory one, and therefore, cannot be contested. Besides, as supported by Marmot and Allen (2014), understanding the basics of health promotion is majorly important in order to conduct the health promotion activity with the most appropriate or urgent objective in public health. Hence, reflecting on my prevailing knowledge, I could evaluate that this newly gained knowledge would also help me to increase the effectiveness of the health promotional campaigns, if I conduct any, thus, helping me in future.
On the other hand, the concept of communication in health promotion also equally attracted me for being more interested to imbibe this subject. Initially, I had this notion that communication is majorly used to only two purposes— one is to interact with one another and the other is in organisational contexts. However, this notion could be eliminated with the help of studying that the concept of communication can be used in health promotion as well. In fact, as viewed by Wills (2014), in the process of health promotion, communication is an indispensable aspect. It is so because with the help of proper communication mode, technique, skills and form only, healthcare professionals can promote health in the society.
As supported by El Fadl, Blair and Hassounah (2016), when a message is being propagated in a proper manner, with the help of proper tools and techniques, it succeeds to reach its target audience effectively, delivering the exact information that it intends to. Hence, in case of health promotion, if communication is implied in a clear, yet simple manner, without eliminating its important components, such as images, sounds, visual representation, conciseness and clarity of message, then the actual aim of the health promotion campaign could be served (World Health Organisation (WHO), 2015). Therefore, this particular concept would help me in future to use effective communication skills and improve my existing ones to promote health, which in turn, would improve the well-being of individuals through the intention of common good.
b) An unclear concept that I still want to explore in future
