Assessment Task 2 – Written assignment HSN 705 2017 Background: The food sustainability module has hopefully allowed you to understand the links between food, sustainability and nutritional health and no doubt you want to consider ways of working that can promote sustainable, resilient and healthy food and water systems within your own work environment. For this assignment, you get the opportunity to do just that! This could relate to your current workplace/sphere of influence or it could be purely hypothetical. Whichever way you go, the task is to provide a detailed briefing paper to your senior management. Task: Writing a briefing paper for your Senior Management You have been asked by your Manager to develop a briefing paper that will outline how the organisation (e.g. hospital, local council, school) could incorporate issues of food sustainability within their strategic plan. Your manager, who has no food or nutrition background, has asked for the following detail: Context: An overview of why food sustainability is an important public health issue (15%) An explanation as to why food sustainability is important within your organisation, ie tell your manager why food sustainability is important in your work place (5%) Plan of Action (see “Writing Tips” document to help with writing goals and objectives and a template for setting out the plan): Analysis and objectives An analysis of where food sustainability issues could be addressed within the organisation (10%) The identification of one key food sustainability issue that should be addressed within the organisation as a first priority; and The articulation of an overarching goal (or aim) and specific objectives regarding addressing this one key food sustainability issue (10%) What needs to be done and how A proposed course of action – that is, a detailed description of what will need to be done within the organisation to achieve the food sustainability goal and objectives identified. This needs to include: o An overview of the evidence. What’s been done before and what evidence is there that you can achieve the goal? (15%) Eg, if you suggest a program to increase food composting, provide evidence that this type of program has been used successfully before. o An outline of the detail regarding how this goal will be achieved. What has to be done and by whom? Tell us about the methods you will use to assess achievement - how you will know when you’ve achieved the goal? (20%) o An outline of who is likely to support this proposal, who is likely to block this proposal, and how you intend to manage the engagement of key players around the implementation of your food sustainability goal. (15%) Summary: Provide a brief summary of this proposal. This will be used as a stand-alone paragraph for use by the manager when presenting this proposal to others. (10%) Assignment Format: 2000 word written assignment (excluding references). Use percentages to guide words per section e.g. 40% of 2000 words is 800 words. Words in tables contribute to word count.
