Introduction
Safer and a healthier population is the mandatory focus of every governing body of every nation. National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHSS) is one such implication enforced by the Government of Australia from 1st January 2013. This essay will provide information regarding all the amendments made that lead to the evolution of NSQHSS in Australian health systems. I would use examples from some private and government organizations that are abided by the standards. I will also try to reflect how implementation of these standards led to improved health outcomes within overall healthcare governance by giving special reference to some case studies.
Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care
The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality (ACSQH) is a collaboration between the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) and Australian government. This agency is responsible for maintaining, leading and improving the safety and quality of healthcare across Australia. Public and private healthcare organizations were then made to follow the standards prepared by NSQHSS (ACHS, 2019). However, there have been amendments made in order to improve the standards that led to the evolution of NSQHSS with time. Thus, the main aim of this commission is to provide better experience to the patients and consumers, improved health outcomes for the current population, greater sustainability and improved productivity.
There are 8 National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHS) standards that cover all aspects of medication, clinical communication, management and prevention of injuries and much more and these 8 standards are to be followed by the health service organizations—
i. Clinical Governance: This describes the governance over the organizations in terms of safety and quality systems in order to maintain and improve reliability, quality and safety of healthcare.
ii. Partnering with Consumers: The main focus behind this is to involve customers in health care development by preparing a person-centred healthcare system which involves the patients during decision-making.
iii. Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infection: It described the management strategies involved to control infection effectively, limiting the development of anti-microbial drug resistance.
iv. Medication Safety: It maintains an efficient and continuous distribution of medicines to patients (Greenfield et al., 2015).
v. Comprehensive Care: It helps in identification of risks while developing healthcare plan of an individual.
vi. Communication for Safety: It describes effective communication strategies between patients, clinicians, families.
vii. Blood Management: It describes the strategies for an effective use of patients own blood ad well as other blood related products.
viii. Recognizing and Responding to Acute Deterioration: This explains the process of how to respond towards patients during their...
