Introduction
The case that is selected is “Bp Deepwater Horizon”. This particular case of the BP oil spill in the year 2010 tends to provide one of the most significant examples for understanding the ways by which it is an ethical case. No matter what it is needless to say that the reckless conduct of BP caused Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill as stated by the judge as well. In this particular case, BP has been connected with some unethical practices, negligence, as well as pollution of the environment. It is completely unethical that this company is disposing of the waste products without following any kind of protocol. From an environmental point of view, this company has polluted the environment by spilling oil
Main body
Overview of the case
In the year 2010, BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil mainly exploded and it caused one of the worst environmental disasters in the history of the U.S. as well as it also took the lives of more than 11 rig workers as well as it also placed one of the most diverse coastal regions on the globe in significant danger of petroleum poisoning. It can be stated that BP had been drilling in waters 1 mile deep, and in the next two days the rig sank slowly and the pipe’s gash was torn apart and it resulting in pushing the oil well on the floor of the ocean. On the other hand, over the next 3 months approximately there were almost 200 million gallons of crude oil that are poured into the Gulf before taking the technological help for sealing the undersea well. Furthermore, apart from being one of the significant environmental disasters, it is also one of the largest oil spills to date. It is needless to say that the BP oil disaster caused a lot of untold long-term damage to the entire region (Kanso, Nelson & Kitchen, 2020).
However, the primary impact on the Gulf, the oil washed up on beaches from Texas to Florida as well as economic hardship that is caused by Gulf Fishing’s closing as well as it was mainly covered by the news media closely. The fines were almost more than 4 billion and it was continuing to enhance in the year 2013 as there were different civil/criminal damages as well as compensation payments that exceeded more than 40 billion. However, in a nutshell, it can be said that corporate failures of this particular disaster are extremely catastrophic for the local economy and ecosystem, along with the BP in the US (Kwok et al., 2019).
If there is any kind of plausible counter-argument to this
This is a pure example of an unethical case. However, is more than 10 years still people don't know the full impacts of the oil spill but there are a lot of speculations for the same. Yes, there is a plausible counter-argument to this considering it as ethical.
This spill is however seen as one of the most deadly attacks on the environment but at the same time, the spill also opened the eyes of a lot of people in terms of the risks that are associated with drilling for oil in one of the most ecologically and culturally rich parts of the world. BP paid a lot of money to the individuals who are affected by this disaster but apart from it this company at the same time also dealt with a lot of fraudulent claims and they sounded too good to be true. However, not only general people but the company itself made some false comments and made it look like it was true. It can be argued that the CEO of BP stated earlier that “I want my life back” it is a hurtful comment considering everything but most people thought that the company is sorry and facing a lot of difficulties (Huq, Nekmahmud & Aktar, 2016).
It is ruled by the judge that more than 67% blame on BP could be coupled with the number of civil penalties. The instances of negligence are quite clear. However, at the same time the judge also pointed out the drilling rig owner namely Transocean Ltd had 30% fault and the Energy Services had 3% fault. Despite all the claims that are made earlier it can be stated that BP is branding itself as an ethical firm via helping the victims in Africa as well as also engaging in some of the projects that tend to generate low pollutants. Throwing light on the above-mentioned discussion it can be stated that the involvement of BP in terms of exploitation of Athabasca Tar Sands in Canada requires ample amount of investigation concerning this matter further. On the other hand, other exploitations in terms of hydrocarbons also need to be investigated.
