Assessment Method:[PAPER]Students are introduced to criminal justice concepts through lecture, videos and class discussions. These concepts are then applied to the analysis of the three main facets of the criminal justice system (police, courts, and corrections). Students will examine the historical foundation, uses, and contemporary issues with the death penalty based off of their understanding of the idea of crime and the societal impact of law. Students will provide information specific to the types of death eligible crimes currently in practice as opposed to the historical death eligible crimes. Students will provide an analysis of the justifications for the death penalty and the justifications for the abolishment of the death penalty. Students will further assess criticisms of the application of the death penalty along racial and socioeconomic lines as well as regional disparities impacting the death penalty.
