PART A – HEALTH AND SAFETY
For each of the following short scenarios, discuss whether the toys and equipment are safe to use in the area suggested.
1. You have planned to use a parachute for some physically active games during outdoor time. It’s very large and it will give the children lots of opportunity to run around. Unfortunately it’s been raining all day. The children were very excited about using the parachute and to avoid disappointing them you wonder if you can move the experience inside.

a) What are the safety concerns with moving this experience inside?
Safety concerns associated with moving parachute activity inside are as follows-
· Chances of bumping into furniture.
· Lack of space to run around.
· Hard floor, falling on which may lead to injury.
· Walls acting as barriers for free movement and run.
b) Based on what you have identified, will you move the experience inside or will you plan something else?
Moving this experience inside is not great idea considering the safety prospective. Also, due to lack of space inside, students who are pretty excited for using the activity may bump into or trip over some furniture. Also, several other hazards are risk factors for same. However, I would prefer moving this experience inside taking few safety precautions and measures before hand so students won’t get disappointed. Moving tables, furniture and other blocking things to the walls is required. Instead of running under the parachute, I will replan the activity and will keep some cotton balls over the parachute and will play music while kids can shake the parachute altogether to make cotton balls bounce and jump like popcorns etc. This would help avoid bumping and tripping risks which were more associated while playing under the parachute.
2. Your lead educator has set the water play table up in the two (2) – three (3) year old room in the middle of the indoor walkway.
a) What are the safety concerns with this experience?
Middle of the indoor walkway would be all water during t he water play activity making it prone to slip and fall accidents. A wet walkway is hazardous for kids as this will be used by other kids who are not involved in water play activity as well and they may fall. Also, at the time while kids performing the activity may spill water in both the rooms which can be prevented by using either of the rooms instead of walkway. Also, 2-3 year age group is quite young to follow the instructions clearly hence spilling of water along with splashing over each other is expected.
b) Based on what you have identified, will you leave the experience where it is?
No, I will not leave the experience as it is. Leaving experience as it is won’t be a great idea as it is clearly indicating hazards and risks associated with slip/trip. Such accidents may cause major injury and comes under high risk category thus needs to be relocated.
c) What will you do?
I would state that this is not advisable as a wet walkway is a tripping/slipping hazard leading to serious accident. Walkway needs to be left free, for this water trough can be moved to the side next to wall or may be in either of room corner. Also, thick mat or carpet is required to be spread on the floor so as to soak any spilled water in order to avoid accident.
3. During outdoor time one of the children in the four (4) – five (5) year age group tells you they have just seen a snake slide into the garden. You haven’t seen it but the child tells you it is in the garden bed.
a) Discuss whether you would remove any hazards immediately or secure the area to prevent children accessing the hazard.
Yes, a 4-5 year age group kid is generally smart enough to identify and tell such things. To avoid any associated risk, I would move all children inside safely without informing them about snake to avoid panic situation. Also, I would calmly ask child about location and description of snake he/she saw. Immediately animal handler would be called and meanwhile, I would request other educator and security staff to try and locate the snake if possible.
b) Give reasons for your answers.
Immediately removing hazards was must so as to avoid any accident/risk because of snake. I didn’t tell other kids about snake to avoid panic situation. Also, my decision to call animal handler is a proactive one so that they can examine the area properly for any signs of snake. Apart from this, trusting the kid is based on description and details shared by him/her on asking.
4. Overnight there has been heavy rainfall and one of the small retaining walls in the yard has started to collapse. You have called the owner and he is on his way to fix it but the pre-preps are due to go outside.
a) Discuss whether you would remove any hazards immediately or secure the area to prevent children accessing the hazard.
I would immediately secure the area by placing chairs or cones in front of wall and will instruct them not to go near the wall so as to avoid any associated accident. Also, i would encourage them to play well away from wall by making them play particular game or activity that would keep them near me and as far as possible from wall..
b) Give reasons for your answers.
Keeping chairs or cones will act as blockage so in case wall collapses before owner arrives to fox it up, kids won’t get harmed. Keeping them indulged in activity with me will increase the safety and reduce the risk of kids going near wall in such state.
5. Conduct some research on basic home fire safety from the following websites:
Raising Children Network – Home Fire Safety Checklist[footnoteRef:1] [1: http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/burns_and_fire_checklist.html]
Queensland Government [footnoteRef:2] [2: https://www.qld.gov.au/emergency/safety/smoke-alarms.html]
Now answer the following questions:
a) Where would be the best place to locate home smoke alarms?
Smoke alarms must be located just outside the sleeping areas of home such that the sound of alarm reaches everyone who is asleep as well. Also for extra protection, smoke alarms can be installed in the bedroom of children as well as bedroom where doors are kept closed at the sleeping time. In case of multistorey apartments and houses, smoke alarms must be located at all levels including outside the bedrooms as well as near path used to get out of building.
b) What maintenance should be carried out on smoke alarms (provide 3 ways to ensure smoke alarms are in working order)?
1. Batteries of smoke alarm are changed once a year at same time every year to ensure working order of them.
2. Smoke alarms must be tested every month by test button pressing and beep listening.
3. Cleaning of smoke alarms must be done at least once a year along...
