Assessment item 3

Journal #2

Length:800 words (maximum)

Submission method options:Interact2 Journal

Task

This journal activity asks you to consider the identification and operationalization of variables in a quantitative study.
You are asked to create a journal to answer the following questions:
1. What are the dependent, independent, moderating, mediating (intervening) or control variables in this study? How are these variables defined?
2. What is the motivation for including these variables into the conceptual framework for the study?
3. How are these variables measured?
4. Are there other important variables that should be included in this study?

Answer these four questions for the following article:

Smith, A. and Oczkowski, E. (2015) Modelling the reasons for the use of vocational training in Australian enterprises.Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources, 53(5), 370-385.

Feedback on this assessment item will be provided by way of a reply to your journal posted by the lecturer. The mark for this journal activity will be available on Gradebook.

Rationale

This assessment task will assess the following learning outcome/s:

  • be able to explain and evaluate research processes within a specific context;

  • be able to apply appropriate research methods;

  • be able to identify and justify the techniques associated with qualitative and quantitative business research methodologies

  • be able to design and develop a business research report.

This assessment activity invites you to apply your knowledge on key elements of quantitative research. The assessment will help you to assess your understanding of the major types of variables used in quantitative research.

Journal #2 :

This journal activity asks you to consider the identification and operationalization of variables in a quantitative study.

You are asked to create a journal to answer the following questions:

1. What are the dependent, independent, moderating, mediating (intervening) or control variables in this study? How are these variables defined?

Define the four variables

·

Independent

·

Dependent,

·

Moderating

·

Mediating

·

Control

Identify the variables

p384-385

.

2. What is the motivation for including these variables into the conceptual framework for the study?

Refer related lecture materials

pp371-374.

3.

How are these variables measured?

Refer Week 7 lecture materials

The explicit definitions of the independent variables and how they are measured is provided in the appendix
on pp384-385.

4.Are there other important variables that should be included in this study?

This should be based on a your personal reflection

Answer these four questions for the following article:

Smith, A. and Oczkowski, E. (2015) Modelling the reasons for the use of vocational training in Australian enterprises.Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources, 53(5), 370-385.

Q1.
Independent variables are not subjected to change in the conte
xt of the changes made in the ratio, nature or presence of other variables in a mutually given setting. As mentioned by Shad, Lai, Fatt, Klemes and Bokhari (2019), in independent variables, as the name suggest are not affected by external manipulation of associated variables. The industry type and the organisational types are examples of independent variables.
Opposite to that of the independent variables, dependent variables get affected easily and by changing associated variables, dependent variables are manipulated. As stated by Charnoz, Lelarge and Trevien (2018), dependent variables appear in the form of outcomes of independent variables. Prominent examples of dependent variables include the likes of taskforce size, permanence of employees in organisation, business plan, staff straining and many more.
Moderating variables cast their influence on the relationship between two variables, one of which must be a dependable variable. The moderating variables, as identified by Loh and Nguyen (2018), impacts the relationship and its nature, regulating the degree of inter-relation both variables have between each other. As example of moderating variable, the provided reward of the employees can be observed, which affects the relationship between the performance of employees and profiting at workplace.
Lastly, there is mediating variables, which explains the relationship between a two other variables, among which one variable must be dependent. Considering the given example of moderating variable, namely provided reward, generate motivation, which drives employee retention, better performance and leads to organisational profiting.
Q2.
In the current assignment the use of the variables, have been done for an array of logical reasons. Firstly, the current study by Smith and Oczkowski (2015), aims at finding out the reasons, the employers provide their employee training and as there are variable aspects to consider, along with their inter-relationships, including both equally and adversely...
