Assessment item 2 Project Proposal and Plan Value: 10% Due date: 22-Mar-2018 Return date: 16-Apr-2018 Length: 1000-2000 words (5-6 pages) Submission method options Alternative submission method Task WHAT TO DO:     1. Follow the Study Schedule and work with the Topics (Modules) in Interact as they provide a "scaffold" for your learning in this subject. 2. Develop a detailed Capstone Project Proposal and Plan using project management software (as listed in the Study Schedule) and the skills you have acquired from IT Project Management to develop a project plan with a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), milestones and Gantt chart. These tools may help. 1. MicrosoftProject Pro (http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/project/); 2. Open source tools like GanttProject (http://www.ganttproject.biz/); 3. OpenProj(http://sourceforge.net/projects/openproj/) 4. OpenProject (https://www.openproject.org/about). 5. ProjectLibre (http://www.projectlibre.org/) 3. Begin using the 'project blog' as a tool beyond the weekly progrees reports for your chosen emerging technology topic: 1. The blog is a way to not only "think by writing" and make your notes but also store project files and links in a cloud-based service. 2. Consider sharing the site with your peers as a way to tell a story and harness each others knowledge. 4. The blog is ideally updated each week with 3 or 4 entries for documenting your project notes and as the foundation for editing and writing the Capstone Project Report. An ideal blog entry will have around 50-150 words (150-600 words a week).   5. Group Work OPTION for Assessment Items (Not recommended for Online Study mode students): The Group Capstone Project Proposal and Plan is submitted by the team of three (3 maximum group size) for a group mark on a project proposal and plan that clearly indicates the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Role and Responsibilities of EACH member to carry an equal share of the load in the project work.   Rationale The Capstone Topic Project Plan allows for a broad range of project areas like systems administration, database systems, IT security, mobile technology etc. Often the project has a sponsor and is linked to your interest or workplace needs. The proposal has a research component (Assessment Item 3 Annotated Bibliography) so in some cases you may need to find a supervisor willing to accept you as a candidate. The Learning Outcomes being assessed in this item include how you interpret and evaluate an overview of recent trends in emerging technologies and innovation and begin to to plan, execute, record and present your research and project work as a capstone experience. Your Capstone Project Proposal and Plan will be evaluated with a series of questions that you can use as a Checklist: · Is the capstone topic area appropriate? · Has the Project Blog been setup? · Has there been sufficient justification of the choice of the topic? · Is there enough scope for a sufficiently deep/complex analysis? · Is the scope appropriate for what might be reasonably expected in the capstone project subject? · Is the methodology proposed clear? · Are the deliverables clearly set out? · Are the deliverables sufficiently complex to justify a pass in this activity? · Is it likely that the proposed activities can be reasonably carried out? · Is it likely that the student will have access to the necessary resources to do a satisfactory job? · Is the time line proposed realistic? Rationale
Problem domain
The project involves implementation of 4G LTE technology over the existing network base of 3G to help mobile users achieve higher speeds of internet surfing at low cost. The LTE system would be installed in the college and would be made available to all the faculties and students of the university.
Figure 1: Wireless network technologies
Wireless technologies are used to connect two modern age devices without the need of using a wire. Wireless networks can be formed using technologies like Bluetooth, LAN, WAN, GSM, or CDMS systems. The WAN has a lot of devices already connected and the demand is only increasing with the need for higher speeds. This demand has led to emergence and adoption of more advanced technologies like EV-DO and LTE. LET is a 4th generation wireless technology that provides high speed connection of up to 100 Mbps downlink at the throughput of 12 Mbps (Verizon Wireless, 2009).
Purpose and justification
More and more mobile users today have adopted smart phones that provide high speed networking capabilities and many of these modern mobiles come with the 4G networking capabilities. Heavy usage of internet data has become common. As the amount of data used over mobile increases, the cost incurred also increases and thus, consumers look for solutions which they can use to surf more data but at the same time save on the cost with reduced data charged. With 4G costing similar as 3G, higher speeds can still be achieved so that the mobile phone users would get high data transfer capabilities, better network capacity, more cost saving and higher response times.
There are several benefits of using 4G LTE and these include higher bandwidth, more spectrum coverage at low cost, and lower tenancy. In USA, when LTE was installed after 3G was already spread all over, the users could experience the increase in the productivity of their networks as well as were able to get more internet speed at low cost. As compared to the normal Wi-Fi connection, 4G technology improves convenience, makes networks more secure, and allowed full mobile usage for applications. Further, it has other benefits like better services, improved productivity,, better process efficiency, improved decision making, more flexibility, reduced costs, and more effective management (Little, 2012).
Sponsor or Supervisor recommendation
The college management would serve as a sponsor for the project and would provide the funds for the installation of 4G network in the enterprise system of the college. With this implementation, the college would be able to achieve following benefits:
· With 4G, the devices would be able to support rich formats of multimedia so that students would be able to consume creative learning through the use of voice and video based learning programs
· A high speed internet connect of 20 Mbps can be achieved by the students which would improve their capacity at the frequency band of 8GHz
· The new implementation would provide out to be cost effective in the long term considering the increasing requirements of data
· A seamless switching between different university services would be easy of the students of the college
· Real time internet services can be controlled...
