Task

This assessment aims to develop and gauge student understanding of the key topics covered so far by answering the following questions. Answering these questions will help you build some understanding for the next assessment item as well as for the entire subject. It is expected that answers to the assignment questions be succinct (i.e. precise and concise) with all sources of information fully referenced as per APA referencing style. You have to reference the text book and any additional material you have used in your answers.
Note that the guide for APA referencing is provided in the resources section of Interact site of this subject.

Answers MUST be written in your own words. No marks will be awarded for any answer that contains more than 10% direct quote (referenced or unreferenced). One or two sentence answers will be too short and only receive low marks. Answers longer than 1.5 pages (12 point font, single line spacing) may incur a penalty if too much non-relevant information is stated. For mathematical questions it is expected that you show intermediate steps of your working. Just stating the correct solution will result in low marks, on the other hand if the working is correct and you only made minor mistakes, you will still be awarded marks, even though the final answer is wrong.

Question 1 [3 Marks]

Compare and contrast the OSI reference model with the TCP/IP networking model. Which one do you think is more useful when working with and describing networks and why?

Question 2 [3.5 Marks]

Complete the following Hands-On Projects from the prescribed textbook (Pyles, Carel & Tittel 2017)

  • Hands-On Project 2-3

  • Hands-On Project 2-5

In order to complete this activity, students should insert screenshots in the assignment document along with a short description of each step taken to complete the project.

Question 3 [3.5 Marks]

Briefly describe the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP). What is the purpose of the ARP Cache?

Question 4 Case study task
[5 Marks]

In your role as a Solutions Architect at Foreshore IT Solutions, you are leading a team of several system administrators. Foreshore IT Solutions is a medium sized organisation and is currently expanding its operations. The company has acquired six sites across Adelaide to accommodate its various departments. You have been asked to design a network by utilizing 10.0.0.0 private IP address.Your designed network should span six sites with a router at each site to interconnect the entire network. It is assumed that each site will have its own single subnet. Company expects approximately 1200 workstation across all the sites with approximate numbers in each building as follows:

Finance Office - 260 workstations
IT Call Centre - 520 workstations
Research and Developmet Office - 120 workstations
Markeing Department - 40 workstations
Information technology - 130 workstations
Head Office - 60 workstations

TASK- Write a 800 words (+/- 10%) (Max) report explaining:

a.The detailed design of a simple addressing solution (with diagram(s) and step by step workout of the calculations) that leaves room for growth, is easy to administer and has the minimum wastage of available IP address space.[ 3.5 Marks]

b.Explain what happens to your design if the number of hosts per network jumps to over 1,024 per building.[ 1.5 Marks]

Q1. Compare and contrast the OSI reference model with the TCP/IP networking model. Which one do you think is more useful when working with and describing networks and why?
Sol. The key comparison between the OSI (Open System Interconnection) and TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) Models are pointed as follows (Stallings, 2013).
· OSI is a standar
d model of networking with definition of 7 layers but, TCP/IP is real model of networking with 5 layers.
· The application layer, presentation layer and session layer are separate layer in OSI whereas in TCP the services of presentation layer and session layer are given under the application layer and there is no presentation and session layers exist.
· OSI networking model transport layer provides guarantee about the delivery of packets from source node to destination. But, this is no so with TCP networking model. There are two different transport protocols in TCP/IP Networking model in which TCP guarantee the delivery of packet from source to destination node but UDP (User Datagram Protocol) does not guarantee the delivery of packet from source node to destination node.
· OSI mode; supports only the connection oriented network communication service but, TCP/IP networking model supports both connection oriented and connectionless network communication services.
· When technology changes then the change of protocols of OSI networking model takes place but with TCP/IP networking model no change takes place.
· There is definitions of protocol, interface and services under the OSI networking model but with TCP/IP Networking model there is no definition for protocol, interface and services.
· OSI networking model is a complex model whereas TCP/IP networking model is simple model.
· OSI networking model does not specifies protocol at any layer whereas TCP/IP networking model specifies the protocols at each of the layer.
· OSI networking model is considered as reliable networking model but TCP/IP is not due to UDP protocol at its transport layer.
· OSI networking model is an independent standard model whereas TCP/IP networking model is dependent standard model.
· The communication approach of the OSI networking model is vertical whereas the communication approach of TCP/IP model is horizontal.
· The network connection under the OSI networking model is bottom layer to upper layer but, it is top layer to bottom layer with the TCP/IP networking model.
As it is very much clear that OSI network model defines the standard for network communication. So, that it is conceptual networking model having the 7 layers. TCP/IP is real implemented physical networking model and also it is working for almost all the networks around the globe. Internetworking is also based on the TCP/IP protocol Suite.
Therefore, selection for networking or network communication the TCP/IP networking model is always taken.
Q2. Complete the following Hands-On Projects from the prescribed textbook (Pyles, Carel & Tittel 2017)
· Hands-On Project 2-3
· Hands-On Project 2-5
In order to complete this activity, students should insert screenshots in the assignment document along with a short description of each step taken to complete the project.
Sol. The screenshots and the short description for each of step taken for completing the mentioned hands on projects are as follows.
Hands-On Project 2-3
The steps and screenshots for completing this hands on project are as follows.
Step 1. all www.gestioip.net/cgi-bin/subnet_calculator.cgi is opened in web browser
Step 2. PIV4 radio option is selected.
Step 3. IP address 192.168.0.0 is typed in IP address field.
Step 4. 24 (255.255.255.0 – 254 hosts) from drop down list box...
