A popular budget hair dressing chain, ‘Cut Short, offering basic hair dressing service has received a report that indicates that customers take up to 15 minutes to be checked in, get seated and request their styling preferences.  This is valuable time lost as each salon has a significant queue of customers every day.  To improve its profitability, it has embarked on the following : a) pre-booking appointments through the website - a customer can select their services (e.g. trim, re-style, blow wave) – date and time of day  b) once pre-booking is completed - customer can choose to pay for their booked service via a payment gateway (credit card, PayPal, etc). Those who haven’t paid 24hrs prior to their scheduled appointment, will have their booking cancelled. c) to encourage pre-booking, appointments booked online will receive a 10% discount. d) customers not arriving on time to be checked in for their appointment will be levied a surcharge. The system also has a hair product purchasing option. The customer demands for hair salons are changing in Australia and other countries as well. The modern customer of salons wants to take prior appointments, so, the chain of cut short has also need to improve their services and related business operations for maintaining their position in Australian market. Currently only basic budget services are provided by this chain to its customer. The customer of this salon has to wait for long time for required hair styles and cutting. The wastage of time is big issue for the Australian citizens especially just for hair cutting. Thus, this cut short branch must change its business strategies, so that, their business operations will not affected and run smoothly in different Australian cities. The presented report shows some recommendations by using which the profit margins and important business operations of cut short organization can be improved.
3. Business operations analysis of “Cut short”
The provided Australian organization is looking for an online appointment booking solution for their salon branches. By using this new appointment system, the customers can set desired data and time for this hair cutting. This will also allow the customers to set their preferences for hair styling and trimming. Each customer of cut short organization has to compulsory make payment before 24 hours, so that, their appointment can be confirmed. For making payments for appointment, different gateways are provided by cut short organization to their customers. If customer makes a pre-booking of required appointment, then, this organization also provides the required discounts. If any customer is not able to make physical presence on booked time for hair cutting, then, extra charge is also applied to that customer. The provided discounts on advance appointments for hair cutting will lead to increased customer base for this saloon. The most important problem identified from the case study is that till now each customer has to wait in saloon for their turn and it leads to huge time loss for the customer. But this pre appointment service will save their time and if they become regular customers to this saloon, then, special discounts will also be applied to their selected services. So, the provided discounts in services will lead to increased customer bases for this saloon.
4. Analysis of risks to “Cut short”
The online appointments and providing pre booking is an effective strategy change in business operations of this saloon “cut short”. The implementation of each change in any business process leads to some potential threats to overall organization. As, any customer is not able to make physical presence on booked time for hair cutting, then, extra charge is also applied to that customer. The same extra charges are also applicable for cancelling the scheduled appointment. This extra charge can lead to customer harassment. Secondly, this saloon is budget saloon, and middle class Australians will make use of it. Expectation of perfect time availability is not possible for these class users. It is nearby impossible that a middle class user is available on time to saloon just to cut hairs or to save extra charges.
