This assessment is designed to get you researching and thinking critically about contemporary


global issues in tourism, and prepare a script which will be the basis of a presentation (A2).


You will
have (3)
contemporary issues influencing tourism globally. They are climate change, Political instability, currency exchange.


. Next, you should


research recent industry and academic sources (2015/2018) to locate evidence and examples of


each issue to then provide discussion of the implications for tourism.


Your assignment will be a 1000-word script (referenced in text). The script will form the basis of Assessment 2 – presentation – and be presented as follows:

This assessment requires you to formally present information which was scripted in


Assessment 1, to the listener/ audience using audio recorded PowerPoint slides. The


information in this presentation will be based on Assessment 1.


The PowerPoint slides

be prepared and audio recorded as being delivered in a


professional setting. They will show evidence of academic research, discussion of literature,


links with
three (3) contemporary global issues in tourism
raised in Assessment 1.


You will provide a well prepared and presented set of slides. You will need to practise audio


delivery to pace the presentation. It must be clear and concise so the audience can understand.


Provide discussion of points raised including concluding statements evaluating content


relevance to the future of tourism and/or hotels.

Global Tourism refers to tourism beyond the borders.
One of the largest industry contributing to global economic development.
International revenue from touris
m in 2000-2017 was 1.34 Trillion US dollars (Statistica, 2018).
Issues like volatile currency exchange rates, political instability in different countries and deteriorating environment conditions influence the business outcomes.
Global tourism brings many economic and employment benefits for the country. The global tourism industry has depicted an increased revenue at the rate of 3.3% since last five years employing 2.6% more people (IBIS World, 2018)

Tourism is influenced by location, weather, cultural attribute of people, political and economic factors.
Tourists flow mostly occurs from the developed western countries to the developing countries. Various features of tourist destinations like physical features (mountains, snow, warmth, oceans) and cultural characteristics attract the tourists.

Tourism depends on the weather predictability to attract the visitors.
The climate change adversely affects the natural beauty of these destinations.
Extreme weather conditions disturb the function of airports, bridges and roads.
Damage to oceans flora and fauna like coral reefs adversely affects the activities like scuba diving due to coral bleaching.
The divers, who preferably visit these places due to coral reefs, are reduced.
More acidic oceans and Sea level rise pose high risk to natural attractions and tourism infrastructure. Winter sports season is shortened by the high temperatures. Climate change Directly damages the natural resources and plants such as coral reefs, beaches and hotels. The destination loses its attractiveness as a tourist destination. It leads to loss of employment in the industry, and also poses high price for the insurance of properties in the high risk areas.

The tourism in cold areas is dependent on winter sports.
Climate change lowers down the snow cover.
Cold destinations lose their level of coldness, the cold seasons get shorter and these places do not retain their normal winter attractions.
Less amount of snow leads to loss of income for ski-diving business and sky resorts.
