COMPETITIVE STRATEGY
Question 1
Competition is a part of open market operations. In the given case, the German luxury car manufacturers Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz have also faced severe completion in the market. However, unlike other manufacturers, the completion was not between domestic producers but among themselves. According to Michael Porter, the competition in the market can be identified using the five forces su
ch as follows.
The first level of competition always exists in the industry. As the German manufacturers were only dealing in luxury cars, they initially didn’t had any share in the normal or economic industry of the market. To overcome this issue, these manufacturers introduced newer models that were affordable to even for the customers looking for a normal car.
The second segment is competition from new entrants. Since it is an open market, it will be impossible to restrict new entities from entering the market. However, the manufacturing of car requires huge fixed and working capital. Therefore, the appearance of new competition will be comparatively low in this industry. But, this will evoke the third segment of competition that is the power of existing suppliers. From analyzing the case study, it is clear that this was existing in the case of German can manufacturers.
One of the most important factors of competition is the customer need. From the given case study, it was clear that all three manufacturers were supplying similar products in the market. It will disperse customer base of the company. To avoid these situations, they started introducing additional features and offers to attract more customers and to widen their economy. The final indicator of competition the threat of substitution is also covered with the strategic planning of these producers. It is necessary for every company to check the existence of competition in their industry like the German luxury car manufacturers to deal with all of them on a proactive basis.
Question 2
Differentiation strategy is used to make a business entity unique from other business in the same industry. The studies have proved that an effective implementation of differentiation strategy will effectively improve the customer base and will also help in reducing competition. In the given case, David John’s have implemented differentiation effectively leading to better returns.
The unique feature of the differentiation strategy adopted by David John is that they implemented in-house differentiation to accommodate customers from different segments. They achieved this goal by introducing many sub brands under DJ’s clothing to make their products more affordable to common people. They also managed to retain the business of luxury clothing business along with differentiation.
While analyzing the reports regarding the working of David John’s business, we can clearly state that differentiation if implemented properly can help in improving the performance of an entity. This is evident from their increase in the profit rate from 2 percent to 7 percent during the post differentiation period.
Question 3
The discussions regarding globalization is always coupled with the optimistic vision towards better profit, more employment, and increased customer base, etc. Most successful inland companies that are planning to enter global market fail to see the risks associated with the same. The following are some risks associated with globalization that made it difficult for Walmart to expand their business to Chinese market.
Walmart is an American retail corporation having business in many parts of the world. The core business of Walmart is divided into hypermarkets, grocery stores and department stores. This company expanded their business from the western countries to China mainly because of its population. Since China is the country having largest population in the world, they expected that establishing their business in Chinese market will result in a huge increase in the customer base. The first problem faced by Walmart in Chinese market is economic. This is because, the economic infrastructure of the Chinese market was entirely different from the...
