Assignment Description:

The assignment is designed to allow you to demonstrate effective business analytics skills using optimisation methods.Youwill need touse linear programming to formulate and model a problem, and Excel solver will be used toconduct theanalytics and obtain the solutions. For theassignment, you are required to form a group of3students.

Each group needs to select a company from the list below and use the company’s website to collect some background information and anytype ofpreliminaryinformation that could help in formulating the optimisation problem of the company. For example you may find some information about a given company’s operations, their branches/wholesales, level of production, etc., that could help you with formulating the problem.

You will realise that there is no direct information about optimisation problems of the companyof your choice, therefore you will need to use the company’s background informationalong with business analytics knowledgeto formulate the problem. For instance for an airline the problem could betheassignmentproblem with assigningof terminals, airplanes, flights and pilots. Accordingly and based onthepreliminaryinformationthat you collect, you need to make assumptions and build up a model for the company andsolve the problem.

The assignment shouldbeformulated based onany ofTransportation,Transshipment, or Assignment problems(you just need to do one out of these three options). You can choose any companyfrom the below listin airline or Metro train industries (for assignment problem), in manufacturing or port shipment industries (for transhipment or transportation problem). Below is a list of companies/organisationsand possibleapproaches to problem solving:

Transportation problem by manufacturing and mining companies:

ADANI Mining(Transportation of minerals from origin to destination)

Honda(Transportation of parts from manufacturersto dealers)

Nissan(Transportation of parts from a manufacturer to dealer)

Transshipmentproblem by manufacturing companies:

Audi(Transportation of parts from manufacturersto dealers)

Mercedes(Transportation of parts from manufacturersto dealers)

BMW(Transportation of parts from manufacturersto dealers)

Assignment problem by companies/organisations:

Air Asia(assignment of terminals, airplanes, flights)

V-line(assignment of trains to different lines)

Melbourne royal hospital (assignment of nurses to different shifts)

St. Vincent hospital (assignment of surgeons, operating theatres based on availability)

Assignmentrequirement:

•choose a company from the list orassumeyour own company•make assumptions about the problem before formulating the problem and modelling(assumptions such as the type of operation, amount of manufacturing and shipment, cost, etc.)•Formulate a Linear Programmingproblem(LP)•After formulating the problem define the following:✓Define decision variables✓Define objective functions✓Define constraints•Implement the model✓Run the analysisusing Excel solver✓Prepare Excel output of the model using excel solver✓Run sensitivity analysisusing excel solverand interpret the results

Assignmentstructure:

•Introduction to the company•Selection of the company✓assumptions about the problem before formulating the problem and modelling•Problem definition✓Identification and description of the problemto be analysed•Modeldesign:✓Formulation ofLinearProgramming problem (LP)✓Defining decision variables✓Defining objective functions✓Defining constraints•Model implementation:✓Run the analysis using Excel solver✓Prepare Excel output of the model using excel solver✓Run sensitivity analysis using excel solver and interpret the results•Indication of optimal solution to the problem:✓Presentsolved problemusingexcel solver•Recommendation and conclusion•Structure and presentation of the assignment•Appendix(should includeboth assignment word document and Excel solver file)

Note: Students need to submit the assignment as a word document along with the Excel solver file used for the analyses.

Introduction to the Company:
Honda is one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturer. Honda is also the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, manufacturing 400 million vehicles in 2019. Headquarte
red in Tokyo, Japan, Honda has become the largest automobile company in Japan and the eighth largest automobile manufacturer in the world. Honda has a diversified business portfolio and has ventured into many different industry verticals. Honda also engages in manufacturing of power generators, marine engines and garden equipment. Honda has manufacturing plants all across the world. Their plants are located across Japan, United States, China, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, India and New Zealand. Honda is focused on quality and innovation as a company culture. They have also created an innovation initiative in this effect which is called the Honda Xcelerator. For the fiscal year 2018, the total reported earnings of Honda were USD 9.5 billion, with a total annual revenue of USD 138.25 billion.
Selection of the Company:
The company we have selected is Honda. The problem to be solved is that of the optimum units of production that Honda needs to manufacture in its Chennai plant to maximise its profitability for the plant. Some of the assumptions considered are; profitability may not be a linear function of the number of units manufactured. We have analysed the relationship between constraints and objective. This relationship is linear. Based on this, there will be a further definition of the objective function, decision variables and constraints to formulate our problem. This will be based on the linear programming model.
Problem Definition:
We have defined the objective to maximise the profits of the Chennai manufacturing plant of Honda. The decision variables are the total number of units of Honda Accord cars and Honda Shine bikes to be manufactured. There are certain constraints for our problem which we have assumed based on our analysis. The constraints are that the labour is only available for 40 hours per day and the steel available per day is only 1000 lbs. Based on a detailed analysis of this problem we will estimate...
