George and his family's critical situation and subsequent life decisions were devastating. Spiritual and religious aspects have an important role in the treatment of individuals with chronic health issues and terminal illnesses like George, who has been identified with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). According to Christian believers, death has been provided its utmost meaning in the context of Christ's distress, resurrection, and death (Helming, 2007). Christians are inspired to be empathetic and to alleviate suffering, but not at any price. The crushing weight of the cross on the back of Jesus, as well as the nails stabbed into his feet and hands, represent the strain of the world's fallen nature that Jesus decided to bear. From this vantage point, Christianity asserts the causal links between sin and evil as well as the world's diseases and suffering (Bogue et al., 2020). In the Christian worldview, Jesus' disciples are considered to endure this fallenness alongside him and to take up individual crosses. For all of their accomplishments and service to God, Christians may subconsciously harbor the optimism of the resurrection (Bible, 2011). Medical technology, according to the Christian perspective, is a God-given gift since He made the world with a framework that can be discovered and manipulated to serve humanity. Humans may be able to live longer lives than previously thought due to the advancement of innovative medical technologies. However, medication is not capable of alleviating all maladies, including dying and death (White, 2020).
Since Christians consider Jesus' resurrection, they admit that suffering is never the end of their lives. Learning about voluntary euthanasia would help George realize that deterring his sufferings wouldn't be the end of his journey in God's eyes. His suffering could be perceived as a testing ground for becoming stronger and serving God's love following his demise. George would also bring harmony to his community, just as Christ's resurrection brought everlasting and sustaining peace to everyone (Paterson, 2008). Following three days of being crucified, Jesus was resurrected. George would therefore recognize his sufferings as a journey leading to death and ultimately a physical resurrection in a similar way that Christ's suffering led to death. George would be optimistic about a better future free of suffering, which can only be obtained through resurrection and death (Frey et al., 2018).
