Assessment criteria:
Your project will be assessed on:
a) your interpretation of the problems b) application of the appropriate concepts taught in your course c) the clarity of your explanations d) the presentation of the report e) the accuracy of your graphs
Notes for using the TI 84+ calculator for graphing piecewise functions.
1. Press the MODE button and change from "Connected" to "Dot" 2. Press y= , then type in the function - eg. y = 1 - ex. Then press + (divide), then open bracket and type the domain: x>0 "and" x and
Plotting graphs using Graphmatica
You are encouraged to use equation plotters to plot your graphs. Graphmatica is a free easy-to-use powerful equation plotter that you may download and use. This will allow you to work with large domain and range which might be difficult to plot manually.
Part A
Applications of functions can be found in almost every field of life. The following problems are designed to familiarise you with a few such applications.
For each of the problems following, you will need to write down coordinates and domains using exact form (which can be a surd). Functions should all be written with standard function notation, for example, f: [-2, 5] —> R, where f(x) = 1 — x2
In Pure Mathematics A this year, you have investigated the following function types:
Linear Quadratic Cubic Quartic Square Root 1 Rational (Hyperbolic and Truncus) Exponential Logarithmic Sine/Cosine/Tangent
