Daniel’s story Daniel, aged fourteen years, became an insulin dependent diabetic six months ago. He and his mother have completed an educational program regarding diabetic self-management. He is now able to monitor his glucose levels and give his own insulin. His mother prepares the family meals and also checks his monitoring records daily. Daniel is an above average student who enjoys sport but not at a competitive level. At his six month check-up you interview Daniel and his parents. At the interview the mother does most of the talking unless you direct a question directly at Daniel or his father. Daniel’s mother states she checks his records daily. She also complains that Daniel refuses to eat all the food she prepares for his evening meal. She is very concerned that this will affect his glucose levels and is very surprised to find that they are stable. Later you talk to Daniel alone and ask him to show you his technique for monitoring his blood glucose. As he discusses this with you he confesses that he 'fudges' his record. If it isn't normal he writes in a normal level or sometimes he skips a test and writes in a level because he knows his Mum will check up on him. He explains that he doesn't eat all his meal because his mother gives him too many cooked vegetables which he hates. He says he would prefer raw vegetables if he has to eat them and not so many. He tells you he doesn't mind giving his injections but he wishes he didn't have to monitor his glucose so often. He wishes he could eat what his friends eat, especially after school. He would prefer his Mum to stop checking up on him so often. At the weekly diabetic team meeting you discover that Daniel's blood glucose levels, tested by the lab, were very high on the day he visited. The doctor states he suspects his home records are inaccurate. The dietician states she is impressed with the mother's understanding of Daniel's diabetic diet. She says the mother seems to have everything under control and is surprised by the high lab tests.

1. Ethical Complexities in the Case Study
Ethics are usually a collection of credence and practices connected to differences between right or wrong in the righteous code of contact in humans. In healthcare sector, ethics are majorly used to address moral rules to supervise professionalism between healthcare workers, with patients and with society in regards to need of the society and the purpose behind the act. A rise in the number of diabetic patients has raised a global concern and it is even resulting in the elevation of ethical and social issues related to it.
After studying Daniel’s case in detail, some ethical complexities were noticed. One of the major ethical problems is the child not sticking to the lifestyle recommended by the specialists. For a child suffering from diabetes, it is necessary to adhere to the dietary restrictions and follow them. Despite the continuous effort of Daniel’s mother to maintain his diet, he does not follow the diet properly, which might have led to the increase in glucose level in the tests later on. Another key ethical complexity is the fudging and skipping of tests by the child. This might result in false reassurance and put the health condition of the child at risk. Extreme steps to help combating the disease are also another ethical complexity observed in the study. It might end up with psychological issues in the...
