Students are required to write a Reflective Journal in which they reflect on unit content and learning experiences between weeks 1 and 11. In this assignment you


should describe an interesting or important aspect of each week’s content/experiences, analyse this aspect of the week critically by incorporating and discussing academic or professional sources, and then discuss your personal learning outcomes. The document structure is as follows (2500 Words):


1. Title Page 2. Introduction (150 words)


a. Introduce the focus of the unit and the importance of the unit to your chosen professional area. Provide a preview of the main experiences and outcomes you discuss in the body of the assignment


3. Body


Reflective paragraphs for each week from week 1 to week 11 (1 paragraph per week, ~200 words per paragraph).

Introduction
This journal reflec
ts the fundamental concepts of Data structures and algorithms and their effectiveness in IT systems and applications. A comprehensive overview of the entire course is done in this report, including the terminology that I gathered and understood from the lectures. The concepts of my interest that I have elaborated upon in this report include stack implementation using linked list, Stack application in Java VM, algorithm design, selection sorting algorithm, comparator, quick sorting, heap sorting, Binary Search tree, 2-3 tree, basic hashing and LSD String sorting. A thorough understanding of data structures and algorithms is the foundational learning step for a programmer. The research and learning through this course and in preparing this report helped in building a foundation for my career aspiration to become a software developer.
Week-wise Reflections
Week 1: Stack Implementation Using Linked List
In the first week of the course, the concept of algorithms, data structures of stack and queues and their implementation in Java was studied in detail. We studied how the theoretical and practical application of algorithms is crucial to problem solving. Algorithms significantly impact various fields like biology, internet, security, social networks, physics, etc. We further studied how the structure of queues work by inserting items from one end and de-queue from the other end. The concept is known as First-in-First-Out. Both the structures can be implemented using arrays and linked lists.
Stack is a linear data structure that holds collection of elements. Simply put, stack implementation using linked list allows two operations of push and pop where stack is a pointer to the head of the list where these two operations happen. A counter may be used to keep track of the list’s size. This implementation is beneficial since it saves memory by allowing growing and shrinking of stack as per requirement. (Sokolov, 2013) discussed representing multiple Last-in-First-Out stacks in memory. There are certain issues involved in implementing LIFO stack using Linked lists in single level memory which are discussed in the paper. I will read more about this implementation to get a clearer picture as Stack using LL is an interesting implementation.
Week 2: Stack application in Java VM
It is challenging to think how stack can be grown or shrunk in size using array. The lecture in the second week discussed this aspect considering that resizing array is not done frequently. The lecture further included how performance of the implementation of stack resizing-array can be analyzed. Resizing array and liked list implementations are compared for their performance. This is followed by discussion on LL implementation of queue, Java collection library and some common stack and queue applications.
I was more interested in understanding the role of stack in Java Virtual Machine since I have been reading about JVM. JVM provides runtime environment in which java code can be executed. JVM creates separate stack during thread creation. This needs deeper understanding of threads in Java which I did in order to understand Java stacks. JVM performs two operations on Java stacks, including pushing and poping frames (Schoeberl, 2005). I understood the basic structure of stack frame in JVM which consists of local variable array, operand stack and frame data. I need to further study to understand how it works, but the little knowledge I gathered is that run-time stack stores every corresponding method call performed by the thread.
Week 3: Algorithm design
The lecture in the fourth week focused on analysis of algorithms. We studied scientific method of predicting the performance of algorithms. This is explained through by measuring running time and performing empirical analysis of algorithms like 3-Sum. Cost of basic operations of 1-Sum and 2-Sum algorithms was discussed, followed by Tilde notation and introducing mathematical models for running time. Theory of algorithms is explained with basic knowledge of bits and bytes and how memory is addressed in 4-bit machine.
Through my research, I understood that algorithm theories represent a structure common to class algorithms (Douglas, 1990). Algorithm theories are abstract in several senses like problem-independence. They can further resolve concerns about control strategy, target architecture and programming language. Different construction methods for algorithm theories are called design tactics. Such approaches are illustrated in research literature on theory of global search algorithms, divide and conquer theory, local search theory, etc. Representing structure of class of algorithms as theory has its advantages of doing away with concerns about programming language, control strategy, programming style, etc. In simple words, problems can be specified by problem theory and designing...
