Often social workers work within government (state or federal) as public servants on the development of policies that have significant impact on society. As a public servant the primary way of informing government decision makers (Ministers or Chief Executives) is through briefing notes. A briefing note, also known as a Ministerial Briefing, is a short document prepared by a public servant that keeps the decision maker informed about issues that they are responsible for. In most cases the turn-around time (from request to submission) for a briefing note is less than 12 hours.



The topic of your briefing note must align with one of the social issues from modules 2-10. In preparation for this assessment please make the most of the assessment support resources on FLO Topic Central.



The word length is brief(if the briefing is longer than two pages it will not be marked and you receive 0%)and so it is important to be concise, focused and persuasive. The briefing notemustbe referenced (using APA referencing guide).

RE Inequities in treatment with Australian immigrants specifically refugees and asylum seekers.
PURPOSE    
The purpose of this briefing note is to brief the Minister about the inequities in treatment based on arrival of individual in Australia.
Also to make you consider policy issue related impact on health caused because of this marginalisation.
To seek Minister’s consideration of the funding migrant related health research in association with health care benefits provided to refuges and asylum seekers.

SUMMARY OF ISSUES
· Significant barriers are faced by refugees and asylum seekers in accessing and engaging with healthcare services,
· Cultural incompetency of students as well as staff in health education and administration.
· Lack of engagement of communities as well as up scaling of accessibility and availability of cultural support as well as professional language support.
· Lack of coordinated national policy to handle health issue of migrants, instead there are policies state wise or territory wise.
· A proportion of asylum seekers living in the community are not eligible for Medicare
· Holders of Temporary Protection Visas (that is, people released from immigration detention centres) are not eligible for certain Commonwealth-funded health services such as free interpreting in private doctors’ surgeries and limb prostheses.
· There are specific groups within the refugee population with particular health issues for whom health service provision is yet to be developed
