Assessment 3: Media Kit

Due: Friday 27 May, 11:55pm AEST Value: 40%

Word count: Media release: 500 words; Media backgrounder: 800 words; Fact Sheet: 400 words. Total Word limit: 1700 words (10% latitude)

Instructions:

The impact of plastic pollution is recognised as a significant environmental threat. “With no improvements to managing waste beyond what’s already in place today, 99 million tons of uncontrolled plastic waste would end up in the environment by 2030,” as National Geographic's Laura Parker observes (2020).

You are a public relations officer for one of the following organisations (choose one only) and have been tasked with developing a media kit that communicates your organisation’s commitment to eliminating the use of plastic. You are encouraged to be creative in developing strategies that your organisation can use to eliminate plastic:

Victorian State Government

A major Australian supermarket chain (Woolworths or Coles)

A global fast-food brand (KFC or McDonalds)

The media kit must include a media release, media backgrounder, and a fact sheet. Students must adhere to the word limit for each component. Workshops will be held during the semester to enable students to develop their media kit writing skills.

Media Release: designed to gain the media’s attention. The release should be engaging, factual, include quotes and provide news “hooks”.

Media Backgrounder: details information about the organisation, its position on the issue of plastic pollution and what it proposes to do to eliminate the use of plastic.

Fact Sheet: provides statistics and relevant information on the issue of plastic pollution.

Supporting images can be incorporated into the documents or included as a separate document. A minimum of two relevant images to be included.

Presentation requirements: Submit as a Word Document or .RTF.

PDF documents are permitted for the Fact Sheet only.

Referencing: Please use APA 7th ed. reference/bibliography format for your sources (see the Monash Library style guide). Refer to the Assessment 3 Tutorial Guide PowerPoint for an example of how you should cite sources in this task.

Refer to the rubric for detailed assessment criteria that will be used to mark this assessment task.

Submission Instructions:

Before the due date check your work in Turnitin: upload your media release and backgrounder only to Turnitin to check for similarities and to ensure you have referenced correctly.

Assessment Submission - all three components: upload your final version of the media kit into the submission box. All three documents (media release, media backgrounder and fact sheet) should be uploaded at the same time.
