Introduction
A registered nurse (RN) is a medical practitioner charged with a variety of duties. Their station in the hospital depends on the various titles and duties assigned to them by their supervisors. Registered nurses lead the teams in the hospital that are tasked with caring for patients with a variety of diseases. New discipl
ines have arisen that allow nurses to specialize in different field of patient care. Coronary care unit is such a discipline. A registered cardiac nurse has great roles to play in the coronary care. He or she works with doctors and other medical staff to ensure that the patients are well taken care of. He or she has tasks of cardiac monitoring, assessments on health, evaluating stress test, vascular monitoring. Cardiac nurses have to possess high specialized skills on coronary care. Cardiac nurses are all registered nurses (Dougherty, 1988).
Areas of development in coronary care
From my nursing skills and knowledge in coronary care, there are some areas that need to be developed further to enhance proper care for coronary patients. These developments will also ensure that proper medication is given to the patients. Failure to embrace these developments, some problems will continue to crop up in the field of coronary care (John, 2000). In addition, some patients will also continue to suffer due to improper handling by the nurses and the other medical staff. Consequently, the training curricula needs to be revised to ensure that all medical practitioners and managements are trained in proper patient care.
From my research, I have identified one area that requires to be looked at carefully for proper handling of patients in the coronary care unit (CCU) (Dougherty, 1998). I found out that there are instances of false positive diagnosis of heart attack or other coronary illnesses from patients admitted in CCUs. I found out that 30 % of cardiac patients in hospitals are not actually having heart attack or other cardiac problems- they are admitted as a result of false positive diagnosis for heart related diseases. This situation has brought about patients being given medication of a disease there are not suffering from. There are even some instances where patients have lost their lives as a result of being given the wrong dosage. In addition, it becomes wastage of resources as medication is given to the wrong patients which could otherwise have been given to the right patient. In some hospitals, it also causes overcrowding of patients in the coronary care unit (CCU). These false positive diagnosis are caused by use of medical instruments which are of low standards.(Murray,2000) If these medical instruments are upgraded or better ones purchased, then the coronary sector in the hospital will highly improve since the rate of false positive diagnosis will then decrease. In addition, the admitted patients will get maximum care as congestion will significantly reduce.
If the above is taken into proper consideration, it will help me meet the standards of Australian nursing and midwifery council (ANMC). This is so as one of the standard required by the council is responsibility and accountability (ANMC,2009) . When proper predictive instruments are introduced and embraced in coronary care unit (CCUs) , I will be answerable to my own actions without putting blame on the predictive instruments. With respect to the ANMC standards, I will take it as my responsibility to ensure that I give the patients the right medication as prescribed by the doctors and be responsible to any inconvenience that I make to either the patient or other medical staff. In accordance to ANMC standards, I will also I will be able to provide comfort needs of the patients. Moreover, I will also ensure proper safety and...
