Assessment 3 is about uncovering the complexities in operations management generally, identifying key themes, intended and unintended consequences and proposing a holistic solution to the problem using a Systems Thinking lens. The following scenario study provides you with a brief overview of a hypothetical problem. Be aware that the scenario provided may not cover every detail that you will need to address in the Written Report, in which case, you will need to conduct additional research, including further research on how emergency departments function in any hospital.Suggested format: Your Written Report should include the following sections and sub-sections. In this assessment, students will try to solve a practical problem by using Systems Thinking tools called System Archetypes combined with value stream mapping. Instructions: Assessment 3 is about uncovering the complexities in operations management generally, identifying key themes, intended and unintended consequences and proposing a holistic solution to the problem using a Systems Thinking lens. The following scenario study provides you with a brief overview of a hypothetical problem. MGT603_Assess 3 Written Report Page 2 of 7 Scenario Overview: Consider yourself as part of a team responsible for managing the operations of an emergency department of a public hospital. The emergency department has received feedback from patients suggesting that the patient wait times need to be improved. The value stream map of the current operations is shown in the attached diagram. The Value Stream Map is can be Found via the Assessment Link. You have been tasked with improving patient turnaround time by reducing the current time to half. To complete the task you are required to identify the various System Archetypes that affect the operations of the hospital and the emergency department itself and based on the archetypes, develop a future State Value Stream Map of the emergency department. It is recommended that you identify and critically analyse intended and unintended consequences, recommending holistic solutions that will optimise the operations of the emergency department without compromising the performance of other functions of the hospital. 1.0 Introduction
A well planned and executive operations plan is essential of the sake of effective functioning of any organization in general. Operational management is concerned with these aspects. Effectiveness of organizational operational management is the key for outcomes efficiency in the organization. In this connection, the following part of the discussion is focussed on aspects like what makes up the key aspects of the operational management of an emergency department of a health care organization. The discussion is made with reference to value stream mapping of the services. The focus of attention is to improve the overall effectiveness of the value stream mapping of these services and the possible implications (benefits) along with along with scope for further improvements and with recommendations presented as well.
Overview of the Background:
The context is an emergency room of health care set-up. As member of team working on the health care organization’s emergency department, the focus is on to reduce the wait times of the patients in the hospital. In this context, the actual focus of the attention is to reduce the wait times of the patients in the emergency room there by making the patient more convenient and productive. However it is expected that the team need to resolve the problem of operational delay, without actually impacting the overall performance of the health care organization.
2.0 Main discussion
Systems Thinking lens and approach
Diverse operational management can be solved using an approach characterized by systems thinking approach. More importantly it is about looking at things from systems thinking lens. Systems thinking approach will be focussed on aspects that include holistic approach towards the problem solving. Evaluation and implementation of solution as per systems thinking will be either in short term approach, where in the focus will be on immediate returns with focus on symptoms as well for long term implications, where in the real problem will be addressed for removing the sole cause of the...
