How would you apply business model generation methods to develop a start-up business opportunity or to solve a business or societal problem?

Think of a business opportunity or problem that you would like to work on, and prepare a report and video presentation on how you would apply business model generation methods in this context. An integral foundation of this assessment is to clearly articulate appropriate start-up launch and implementation imperatives. This includes learning from entrepreneurs and learning from failure.

Key points to consider:

  • Ensure you have appropriate theoretical and practice-based integration

  • Provide your definition of business model design and start-up launch and implementation

  • Populate the business model canvas with supplementary discussion and notes to justify each of the BMC components

  • Provide a concise, yet brief overview of the product or service you are proposing, and articulate in each of the BMC components

  • Expand upon BMC components of “value creation, customer segments, channels, customer relationships, key resources, key activities, key partners, and cost structure and revenue streams”. Explain how your proposed start-up, product or service relates to these components and provide examples

  • Briefly demonstrate and explain how your BMC incorporates design thinking and lean start-up

  • Articulate the value proposition by delineating the 4 BMC questions (what, who, why and how)

  • Apply learning from entrepreneurial failure as a method to successful BMC implementation

  • Define, explain and provide examples how you applied quantitative literacy (or research) into your BMC

Preparation of your report:

  • Your findings should be reflected in a BMC and supplementary discussion of 2500 words equivalent, excluding references and appendices

  • Your report should include a cover page, an executive summary, an introduction, and finish with a conclusion.

  • Format your report in 11-point font, and single-spaced. The report must be paginated, spell-checked and tables/figures/graphs must be sequentially numbered and captioned.

  • Make sure you include in-text citations and a reference list, and you must include at least 5 references appropriate to the topic of your assessment.

Preparation of your video presentation:

  • Prepare a brief (2 minutes) video, talking to the camera, to summarise the key points of your BMC.

  • Creativity and innovation is recommended, but ensure your video provides an appropriate summary of your findings.

  • Include the URL of your video on the front page of your report
