Data collection: We have downloaded data on the most popular female and male names in South Australia between 1944 and 2015 from a government website (source above). Data from a single year in each decade, i.e. 1945, 1955, ….., 2005, 2015 for males and females has been extracted and provided for you in an excel file called Names.xlsx. The first ten rows of male names for 1985 is shown below. Column 1 (Given name): consists of first names for boys Column 2 (Amount): is the frequency of babies in South Australia given the name shown in column one. Column 3 (Position) is the rank relative to other names, i.e. how popular the name was relative to the others. The name ‘Jack’ was ranked no. 1 and therefore the most popular in 1985. Data storage: We are not entirely sure how the data was generated, perhaps a government worker obtained the names recorded on birth cert AssessmentInformation COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA Copyright Regulations 1969 This material has been reproduced and communicated to you by or on behalf of Kaplan Business School pursuant to Part VB of the Copyright Act 1968 (‘Act’). Visualisation: The Wordcloud below is one way to visualise the data so that it is clear which names are the most popular. Task 3: (100 words, two visuals, 5 marks) Select a sample of names from the first (1945) and last year (2005). Create two visualisations (e.g. a table, or a chart) showing how the most popular names have change. Explain your main findings in a paragraph. Data Analysis: Some names, for example David, have been used in every decade, however their popularity has changed. We constructed the table below, which shows the number of male babies in South Australia called David in years 1945, 1955, ….., 2005, 2015, and the ranking of that name during that year. You can see that the name ‘David’ peaked in popularity during the 1960s (positioned at no. 1 in 1965 with 631 occurrences) and lost a lot of popularity by the 1990’s and 2000’s (positioned 24th , 92nd and 112th). Name: David Year Amount (frequency) Position (Rank) 1945 269 4 1955 455 2 1965 631 1 1975 304 4 1985 249 6 1995 88 24 2005 21 92 2015 17 112 Task 4: (250 words, 8 + 2 = 10 marks) 1. Illustrate your results using tables and charts and explain the outcomes. 2. Suggest two other analyses you could perform.
