Assessment 3: Group Project (60%) Overall Due Date: Week 11

This assessment builds on your theoretical knowledge and applies that theoretical learning to a practice situation.

Students are required to work in groups of 3-4 to: • Design a simulated development of a community project to a chosen target group • Present their group project to the class • Individually reflect on their experience and research completed

In order to understand your target group, your student group will be required to develop survey questions for your chosen target group regarding an issue that currently impacts the Australian community.

After gathering this information, your student group is required as a group to ‘design’ a program and/or project that could support your chosen target group and present it to their classmates.

Steps in the process:

1. Choose your target group 2. Consult the literature regarding your chosen target group 3. Decide on the methodology and methods for responding to needs in the chosen target group 4. Construct your project making reference to the community tool box and based on evidence from the literature about your chosen target group 5. Respond to factors such as, ensuring participation, facilitating empowerment, social inclusion, managing conflict, and reflexive practice 6. How will the project be sustainable once you as facilitators withdraw from the community?

The following areas will be covered: • The process of developing the project/program • Any barriers in gathering of information • The application of the capacity model of Community Development • The expected outcomes Individual Reflective Essay (800-1000 words):

Student are required to write a reflective essay on their program and/or project, including their experience of collaborative work, any challenges they encountered, and application of theory. Students should make use of at least (5) five peer reviewed articles.

Introduction
Community development projects are developed with the purpose of engaging and mobilizing a community in a developmental intervention, for meeting their needs related to the identified issues the group is experiencing. In the following section, such a community development program would be developed, upon selecting a particular group. In the next phase, a reflection would be provided to explore the understanding and learning from the project development.
Part 1: Community Development project design
Selecting the target group
For the current community development project, the Homeless youth has been selected as the target group. The homelessness is one of the key concerns for the Australian youth population. Homeless teenagers and young adults are facing a range of issues in terms of living a healthy life and pursuing a desired career. Considering the increasing concern related to the issue, this group has been selected for this community development project. Mainly teenagers and young adults aged 15 to 24 years old, in West Australia, who undergoing homeless phase, would be included in the program.
Consulting literature about the target group
A range of studies have been conducted to evaluate the issue of youth homelessness. In this context, it has been revealed from the recent survey by Mission Australia that one in six 15 to 19 years old young people in Australia are facing homelessness, indicating the need for national homeless strategy. The highest rate has been found in the Western Australia, which is one in five youth; and lowest rate is found in Victoria, which is one in 8 people. Instead of undertaking significant initiatives by the government, the issue is still at its peak, indicating that the government is failing to support this group of people. A range of reasons have been found behind their homelessness (Fife, 2017). Most of the young people usually have seen to be forced to leave their home due to violence, family breakdown or other crises. Some key risks factors those are putting these people at risk of homelessness are “mental health issues, substance abuse, family violence or relationship issues” (SBS News, 2018). The impact of homelessness has been seen to be multifaceted, affecting every aspect of their lives. Some key consequences include “poor mental health, poverty, trauma, substance abuse, social isolation and are victims of violence”. In Melbourne, 40% young people have been seen to move from youth homelessness to adult homelessness (Coleman, 2016).
Deciding methodology for responding to target group’s need
Considering the issue of the selected target group, to understand and respond to the target group’s need, needs assessment has been selected as the key methodology, for which a survey would be conducted through the project, to gain information from first handed resources.
