“ HOW SAFE IS TOO SAFE ? ”
INTRODUCTION :
A potential threat (or) damage that happens without any potential gain in the settings is referred to as risk (Wolke, 2017). Among all of the organisational aspects, risk is an inherent one (Dionne, 2013). According to the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare (2017), risk in healthcare setting is “the chance of something happening that will have a negative impact.” Whereas, it is the probability of an event (or) circumstances to take place which implies negatively on the financial as well as the operational risks in business sector (Dionne, 2013). There are many predisposing factors in the working environment that causes harm to an individual (WHO, 2019).
The chances of risk can only be controlled by appropriate identification, following strategies to handle it and also by implementing effective measures so as to avoid its relapse (or) reoccurrence (Wolke, 2017). Risk management is the process incorporated in every organisation to foresee and implement preventive actions for the risk occurrence (Papazoglou, 2017). It is co-ordinately worked upon by setting the processes and activities to follow, lay down the rules and responsibilities for the appropriate working, which are combined for the making of an organisation’s control actions (Green, 2016). The international efforts are majorly focused on addressing the issues that are concerned with the consumers and the occupational safety, as the nature of occupational environment is also growing complex day by day (Streimelweger, 2015).
While considering the healthcare sector, there are different initiatives that are adopted by the organisations aiming the promotion of safe and quality healthcare services, improving the care processes and also to strengthen the existing healthcare systems (WHO, 2019). One of the major risk in this area is the occurrence of adverse events in the hospitals, which happens due to the failures in patient risk assessment and inappropriate patient care (Balthazar, 2017). Not only other professionals, but the healthcare professionals are also susceptible to these kind of occupational injuries and diseases. It is because they are directly prone to it in relation to their service nature, the equipment they use, the facilities provided to them and also the patients whom they deal with (Arcanjo, 2018). Even the primary healthcare professionals in the community healthcare settings has to deal with the violence and other problems in the atypical work settings (or) the environment they work in (Arcanjo, 2018). Hence, they must be ensured with safe working environment to avoid such risks so as to provide the safe services to their patients (Komisar, 2019).
Through this assignment, the tragic event that happened on a ship which lead to the death of a crew member and how the risk management strategies were applied which relates to the risk management of knee jerk type reaction that is applied in the clinical settings is explained. It also focuses on the various intrinsic and extrinsic factors that account in the risk management process.
RISK MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES IMPLEMENTED WITHIN THE ENVIRONMENT :
The YouTube video for this assignment is an experimental education program where the students experience an outside of the traditional classroom and this also helps them to utilize risk as a tool to create everlasting impressions. In this video, the speaker is Captain Ian Ridgeway who shares about his experiences of sailing and how he developed interest into it since his schooling times. The tragic event is about an eighteen year old crew member, who wanted to climb the loft, but unfortunately slipped and lost his life in that accident. Benjamin was the boy involved in this event. He showed an interest in climbing the loft and crossing the rope, which the Captain of the ship had denied. But Benjamin defied the requirement of the pre- authorisation prerequisite that should be approved by the captain if anyone wishes to climb the loft. Benjamin went ahead with his desire and unfortunately meet with the accident that was most unexpected.
The investigators who arrived at the accident site, took the immediate step of banning all the passengers from ascending the loft which was approved by the law authority too. This also has led to the disappointment that no one can ever after climb the loft to enjoy the beautiful scenery that was visible only from the top which most of the passengers and visitors enjoyed on board.
This ship also had a custom of ferrying the fifth grade students every summer when they were going to be graduated from the school. Even Captain Ian had taken this ride when he was in his school, which has paved the way of interest of sailing in him. But due this ban, these students also could not get engaged in such activities which they always enjoyed to do. Teenagers always tend to have a broader mind in performing the activities that requires to take risk. They have the curiosity in them which keeps them engaged in the risky behaviour activities. This is controlled by the frontal lobes of the brain which is responsible for the hyperactivity control and also for judging the situations they deal with (Duell, 2018). Age is a major factor to be evaluated while considering the risk assessment (Sannino, 2016).
So in this situation, the fifth grade students do not have the maturity to analyse the risk in this challenging activity, as they have seen the other crew members taking the same risk and climbing the loft. This act would only increase the urge in them to go ahead with the same activity and enjoy the scenic beauty at the top of the loft. In such a case, only a knee jerk reaction is suitable to be taken in order to ensure the safety of the other passengers who would board the ship in future.
Knee jerk reaction refers to the strategic implementation which is taken immediately after the occurrence of an incident with a negative outcome. This reaction (or) the implementation is done without appropriate thinking about the previous positive outcomes (or) the even the later consequences of it. This just relies on the assumptions done spontaneously after visiting the incident site and having the first impression details about the incident (Cambridge Dictionary, 2020). But this implementation solely focusses on the prevention of further reoccurrence of the similar events just by analysing the present incident. It does not take the count of how frequently this incident has happened before and also doe not use the frequency scores that measures risk occurrence (Green, 2016).
