Emergency management of adult smoke inhalation injuries
Good Morning/Evening
My presentation today centres on the theme of emergency management of adult smoke inhalation injuries. In this presentation, I will be
demonstrating the emergency symptoms of smoke inhalation in adults along with the necessary intervention that needs to be provided by nurses in such situations.
So, one of the major causes of concern in emergency situations involving fire and fire related accidents is smoke inhalation. Smoke inhalation has been found to be the major cause of death in fire cases, even more than burn injuries (Toon et al, 2010). This makes it a priority for emergency care in cases of fire accidents.
What usually happens in the case of smoke inhalation injury is that there is failure of proper respiration due to lack of available oxygen as well as inhalation of toxic substances. This constricts breathing and leads victims to choke. In more severe cases thermal injury to airway can lead to fatal breathing problems.
Provision of emergency aid to victims of smoke inhalation can reduce death and injury (Lawson-Smith et al, 2011). In order to address this, proper interventions must be undertaken. Some of these interventions can be in the form of provision of oxygen, intubation, first aid and respiratory assistance along with provision of poisoning antidotes (Lawson-Smith et al, 2011). We will discuss these interventions in detail shortly.
So the aim of this presentation is to provide a list of guidelines to nurses in order to enable them to take proper and informed action when faced with smoke inhalation injury in adult patients. This is done keeping in mind that proper early care can save lives and reduce pain in victims.
I will first provide a brief background on smoke inhalation and the causes of its serious effects on the human body. Smoke inhalation is the leading cause of death due to fires (Toon et al, 2010). Smoke inhalation injuries occur as a result of multiple mechanism injuries. These are thermal injuries to respiratory organs, chemical injuries from toxic substances leading to deposits and congestion (pulmonary...
