Title: Humans are a product of their environment
Introduction:
Cultural identity means the race, tradition, and culture in which a person is grown and nurtured. A person belongs to a specific culture and race which defines the individual identity and the personality of that person in a socially compatible group. For example, the groups of people belonging to the Aboriginal and the Torres Strait Island (ATSI) have a specific group ethnicity in comparison to the other people residing in the other regions. In comparison, cultural engagement terms mean the values, beliefs, and behaviour exhibited by a person while interacting with other people in society (Britannica, 2022). The original native Australian people living in the Aboriginal and the Torres Strait Island have unique cultural beliefs, practices, and traditions and speak a local language for communication and interaction. Torres Strait Island consists of a group of islands present on the northern side of Australia (Britannica, 2022).
The Department of Health in Australia is taking special initiatives to develop the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island regions to close the gap. Some of the initiatives include providing general health plans and the implementation of a suicide prevention program to mitigate the hazards of bad mental health and to improve the mental health status and emotional well-being of the people living on this island. A further initiative by the Australian government is to prevent the occurrence of racist events among the indigenous people residing on this island (Mazel, 2018). Statistical data reveals that the Indigenous Australian Natives have poor health in comparison to the native Australia country people and the Indigenous Australian people get sick more often (Mazel, 2018).
Theory:
The term “Nature vs Nurture” is correct as nature means the environment in which we live. Our cells contain DNA consisting of genes that define our character traits and behavior. Further experimental studies have reported that there is an effect of both the environmental nature and the genes on the behavior of people in families and their children in future generations. Thus about 50% of our behavioral traits depend upon genes and the remaining 50% depending upon the environment in which a person lives. In comparison, nurture means the capability and the ability to raise children in a family with the infrastructure and the necessary facilities (KPU, 2022).
The nurturing environment is the major factor that decides our survival and the ability to grow and develop according to the set rules and principles in different families (KPU, 2022). Thus the saying “that humans are a product of their environment” is correct. People find freedom and independence in the environment where there are born with complete freedom, privacy, and flexibility to interact and communicate with the people living in the same environment. As a child grows up there is a significant effect of the social learning behaviour on the development of the personality of a child. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people have a rich heritage of being food gatherers, making house shelters, communicating through a local language, following spiritual norms, and having a rich economic and cultural diversity (KPU, 2022).
Traditionally, ATSI people hunted reptiles and birds in their natural environment. They collected fruits and honey for their survival in the island forest. ATSI people used indigenous medicine to treat themselves after being attacked by reptiles and animals in the forest....
