The basic aspects of doing business i
n the modern context have been revolutionised by the changes such as internet and digital techniques applied to business. In fact, the onset of digital era has not only reduced the boundaries between nations, it has shifted the attention of the organisations from their host nation to global expansion of business. As per Likoko and Kini (2017), having sustainable business in every possible market of the world is the dreamy side of organisational approach.
Thus, it can be inferred here that sustainability in business is the proactive perception, which pushes organisations to bring in all positive enablers into their business so that they cannot only show their concern to the impacts over the environment, but also they maintain the quality of the products that are served to consumers.
At the same time, what makes sustainability in business a challenging notion is the fact that competency level, for which organisations show rivalry in open market, is to be maintained fairly without making compromises (Ludeke-Freund et al., 2018). Thus, there are multiple dimensions of the conceptual understanding of sustainability in business these days. The utmost priority to sustain business is implied by having environmental ethics of business intact within business practices of the organisation.
The Dimensions of Sustainability: Environmental Ethics
At first, it is significant to note here that environmental changes have given several challenges to the organisations in the global context of doing business. The companies doing any kind of business are now days recognised as ‘fairly operational’ only if they have followed the transparent corporate culture of producing business values and ethics that adhere to the growth and development of sustainable environment.
Rafiaani et al. (2018) observe that the corporate policies about environmental ethics are expected to be protecting environment at first because that is the standpoint to make sure that sustainability in business is approached well. These two dimensions are interlinked because when it comes to analyse sustainability for organisations, they have to highlight that they are strongly positive towards maintaining the environmental balance. It is one of the major components of having successful state of business, which organisations tend to be operations with their environmental ethics intact (Stahl et al., 2020).
Secondly, as per Martins et al., (2019), what makes sustainability in business a necessary practice is the approach of the some business directives; they tend to be such as quick fixes and have the short-term based gains in mind. These business dimensions promise that by having some ‘permissible violations of the environmental norms’ (though they are not permissible), the gains of the company can be increased. Small-scale business owners are often seen involved in these practices, which do not sound fair.
It not only hinders the growth of the national economy but also it poses serious questions over the availability and implementation of the environmental policies in the local business structure of the nation. The above can be understood by the example of developing regions of the world where small and disoriented markets are developed with a view to encourage the local businesses to have profits. However, Pieroni, McAloone and Pigosso (2019) perceived that these encouragements are not taken in a positive way.
Most of the small-scale business segments have clear violations of the environmental norms. They are visibly found involved in the process of either polluting air or by forcing a large population to remain dependent over the contaminated water. Thus, they pose grave threats over the environmental balance of the nation. When small-scale business practices are reviewed for evaluation by the international organisations, the developing regions find themselves lingering behind due to these serious failures.
Norms of Sustainable Environmental Ethics
In the context of the above, there are some directives, which organisations— either they source their business practices from developing or developed regions of the world— have to adhere, when it comes to define sustainability to a large extent. Global organisations are now expected to understand that by having specific business measures, their actions can potentially damage the balance of environment and, therefore; they have to review their business practices with a view to control this damage (Gallego-Alvarez & Ortas, 2017).
At times, organisations tend to overlook these damages by assuming that losing a small bit of atmospheric and ecological equilibrium for a short term would not harm the environment in the longer run. However, their administration must have focus on the long-term impacts that their business practices can have over the environment and this formulates the ethical values related to the sustainable approach of doing business with keeping nature around in mind (Rafiaani et al., 2018). As per the new trends in the global business culture, the organisations have shown commitment to sustain their business practices in the light of the fact that they will contribute significantly in the process of sustaining environment around them.
It is one of the most necessary practices, which they need to imply. The modern organisational culture includes the possibilities of business practices that are dedicated to project a safe environment to work. These...
