Research methodologies are an excellent way of focussing and identifying issues within a research. Three methodologies have been developed in this regard, each exhibiting different qualities.
Quantitative approaches rely on numerical data for research while qualitative methods rely on observations and narratives (Cleland & Durning, 2015). The mixed approach combines the use of quantitative as well as qualitative approaches to draw conclusions. Research that has a scientific focus is best analyzed with quantitative approach while socially focussed research is more effectively analyzed using qualitative methods. Mixed approaches are applicable when there is a need for in-depth study of a topic. (Creswell & Clark, 2007, p. 5).
The aim of our research is to identify whether student interaction with the school's staff and education could enhance their sense of belonging to the school and in what ways. While the question is straight, the answer to it is very complex and requires in-depth study of both human behavior and student psychology.
For such a research, a combination of both quantitative and qualitative method is necessary and hence a mixed approach would be more appropriate (Hurmerinta-Peltomakl & Nummeia, 2006).
