Assess your achievement motivation. Look at your achievement motivation in a specific area of your life—a class you’re taking, your motivation in school as a whole, your job, or progress toward your career goals. Then answer the following questions: • How strongly do you want to succeed? • Do you believe your ability is crucial, or is success mostly a matter of luck? • How much do you enjoy what you’re doing? • Do you have the skills needed to succeed? If not, what are you doing about this problem? Honest responses to such questions may help you to understand the strength of your achievement motivation and what’s needed to increase it.
