1.0 Executive Summary
The organization selected at present for operations management is Glenbrook Steels. The company is located in the North Western coastal regions of the country. The report details critical evaluation of the organizational functionality and insights are drawn into the operational management of the organization in general. Different perspectives like plant layout, plant capacity management, Location factors, supply chain factors, TQM principles and Inventory management principles are discussed in detail. Also there is focus on material handling systems of the organization.
2.0 Introduction
2.1 Objectives of the report and overview of the organization
The ultimate objectives of any organization in general are to maximize the revenues from the organizations. Typically for manufacturing organization, the objective lies in maximizing its current operational efficiency. In this regard, there will be maximum effort by the organization to increase their capacity utilization, enhance productivity, and implement better strategies to augment the efficiency of production, marketing and other support functions as well. Also it is very much important for organizational location mapping, designing effective layout, selecting right equipment and material etc. At present times there is equal weightage being assigned to factors like quality monitoring. Quality assurance and quality monitoring are equally significant domains for improving the organizational revenues in general. When an organization exhibits superior quality standards, it is more likely that the organization recognition will be more in the customers and customer can reciprocate better retention and improved loyalty towards the organization products. There is no alternative but to generate better products and services, if the organization likes to grab maximum market share. Product design is another significant area where both the product characteristics as well as the customer interests will be taken care in designing the ultimate functional levels of the organization. Hence an integrated approach spanning diverse functions of the organization is very much required to evaluate organizational operations in general. The following part of the discussion will detail these aspects in the context of a New-Zealand manufacturing organization. Organization is into manufacturing sector and hence manufacturing characteristics of the organization are evaluated and apart from that there is focus on other functions of the organization like staff relations and performance monitoring methodologies being employed. A detailed insight into the operations followed by proposals for improving the current organizational performance characteristics make up the current report.
Glenbrook Steels Limited is the organization selected for study in the current report. Glenbrook steels limited is located at about 40 kilometres south of Auckland. The location is Glenbrook. This is being led by New Zealand Steel Limited organization. The mill is established in the year 1968 and it is producing steel products since then. As of now about 650,000 tonnes of steel is being produced every year from this organization. The maximum amount of the steel requirements of the country are at present being met by this company. Company has developed dedicated railway lines for carrying out the logistics of the coal and the lime supply every day. The manufactured steel products also will get carried away from the plant on daily basis. More than 1200 employees work in the organization at present in Glenbrook. The company is established as New-Zealand Steel Investigating Company under the Steel and Iron industry Act, 1959. This is done after several attempts to succeed in smelting ironsand the low grade ore presented in the north western coastal areas of the country. In the timelines undergone changes in ownership through several partners and at present BHP is leading the organization with more than 92% of the shares and named as BHP Newzealand steel Limited and later got its name changed as Newzealand Steel when BHP got listed.
3.0 Analysis
3.1 Capacity management
As of now the organization is one of the leading steel manufacturing organizations in the country. There are two important contributors of the organization to make it the leading manufacturer meeting the consumer needs in the country. The first is the fact that the iron sand is abundantly available in the region and hence all the consumption requirements of the country are being met with the production from this company. As high as 40% of the total steel requirements of the country are being met by the company. The second is the well connected railway logistics for both the incoming raw material and outgoing finished products is well designed and meeting the requirements well effectively. However still inspite of the fact that the organization is established back 60 years back, the company production should have even more and should have captured even more market in the country. If not in the local market the company has bright chances to utilize international market too. Capacity of the company can be increased, as there is abundant ore available in the region. However the plant production capacity is a bottle neck and so there can be expansion done for the organization to improve the current capacities of the organization.
