As you continue to interview Thanh and his mother, you discover that Thanh’s grandparents—along with their 5-year-old daughter, Thanh’s mother—left South Vietnam at the end of the Vietnamese war. Thanh’s grandfather, now deceased, had worked at the American embassy in Saigon as a translator, and managed to leave with his wife and child on an American transport ship when Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese. Thanh says that his grandparents never spoke of their experience of leaving Vietnam, and his mother had very few memories of the event.
