You will be given an ‘Ethical Dilemma’ where
your task will be to:

• 
  Use a brainstorm and mind map to understand the dilemma and propose potential solutions.
  

• 
  Apply the Blanchard and Peale ethical framework ( See below) to your proposed solutions to find a recommended solution.
  
  


• 
  Write a 500 word essay with
  correct referencing which includes examples of in-text citations, direct quotations, paraphrasing and a reference list.

Ethical Dilemma:

Ethical Sourcing – Tiffany’s Diamonds

Ethicsandmoralsrelate to “right” and “wrong” conduct. While they are sometimes used interchangeably, they are different.Ethicsrefer to rules provided by an external source, e.g., codes of conduct in workplaces or principles in religions.Moralsrefer to an individual’s own principles regarding right and wrong.

Sam and Tommy
had known each other for 5 years as friends before their romance blossomed. On a European holiday together Tommy proposed to Sam on the Pont des Arts within sight of the Eiffel tower. Tommy had spent the accepted 2 month’s salary on a Diamond from a reputable dealer in Melbourne. When purchasing the Diamond he asked about it’s origin but was not worried when the dealer said it came from regions that produced “Blood Diamonds” but he was not sure if it was a “Blood Diamond”.

Sam accepted the proposal. Sam was aware of the concept of ethical sourcing as she worked in the fashion industry, she started to question the origin of the Diamond and if it was sourced ethically. When they returned to Australia Sam asked Tommy more details about the diamond and was uncomfortable when she realised it may have been sourced by child labour or by activites from conflict zones. Tommy started to question his judgement in choosing the diamond and wanted to placate Sam concerns..

What does Tommy do? Are there other courses of action for Tommy?

Ethical dilemma analysis (Done first; informs the essay)

• Produce a Brainstorming list describing issues/problems in relation to the ethical dilemma.


• Produce a list of Actors in this dilemma.


• Develop a mind map representing issues/problems/actors from the lists above.


• Clearly define a range of solutions to the problem/s that Tommy faces in relation to the ethical dilemma.


• Use the Blanchard and Peale matrix to assess the ethical suitability for the solutions you have proposed.

Essay (Follows problem solving)

Submit your findings from the ethical analysis above in a 500 word essay with introduction, main and conclusion sections, including;

· Brief explanation of the Blanchard and Peale ethical framework,

· Explanation of the options that Tommy has,

· Justification for the recommended solution you derived from your problem solving,

· Support your essay points by using the attached reading in referencing your essay paying attention to paraphrasing, quotation, in-text citations and the reference list.

· Include in exam booklet – Brainstorming list, Actors, Mind map diagram, List of Solutions, Ethical Dilemma Matrix
