Ethical Sourcing – Tiffany’s Diamonds

Ethicsandmoralsrelate to “right” and “wrong” conduct. Sam and Tommy
had known each other for 5 years as friends before their romance blossomed. On a European holiday together Tommy proposed to Sam on the Pont des Arts within sight of the Eiffel tower. Tommy had spent the accepted 2 month’s salary on a Diamond from a reputable dealer in Melbourne. When purchasing the Diamond he asked about it’s origin but was not worried when the dealer said it came from regions that produced “Blood Diamonds” but he was not sure if it was a “Blood Diamond”.

Sam accepted the proposal. Sam was aware of the concept of ethical sourcing as she worked in the fashion industry, she started to question the origin of the Diamond and if it was sourced ethically. When they returned to Australia Sam asked Tommy more details about the diamond and was uncomfortable when she realised it may have been sourced by child labour or by activites from conflict zones. Tommy started to question his judgement in choosing the diamond and wanted to placate Sam concerns..

As per the observation of the provided case study, Tommy is supposed to go through his ethical dilemma from the concept of five P’s first. The purpose of his dilemma is to strive for knowing the exact cause of Sam’s concern which is to identify the source of the diamond; whether or not, the diamond is taken through the naïve industry of child labor (Hsu, 2019). Though he does not know the solution to this issue yet, he is expected to think about the alternatives through which, the state of resolution can be resolved (Fogler, LeBlanc & Rizzo 2014). Secondly, what makes the ‘proud moment’ to happen in the case is also significant. Tommy has to identity the standpoints in this decision that his opinion and search both are relevant or not.
Additionally, the patience is the key driver to solve the dilemma. For Tommy here, there can be two dimensions which can affect the course of solution (Fogler, LeBlanc & Rizzo 2014). The first one is his own ignorance to the source of diamond and the...
