The College of Westchester PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATIONS Prof. Terry Keyes Persuasive Messages Read the following scenario and construct an appropriate persuasive email. Situation: As Public Relations Director for the Business and Accounting Association at your college, you have been asked to find a keynote speaker for the first meeting of the school year. The owner of a successful local firm, TempHelp4You, is an alumna of your college, Ms. Marion Minter. You think not only would many students enjoy learning about how she started her business, but also that some might like to sign up with her temporary help agency. She would need to prepare a 30-minute speech and take questions after the talk. The event will be held from noon until 1:30 pm on a date of your choosing in the college’s Student Center. You can offer her lunch at the event and provide her with $50 gift certificate to a popular local store. You need to have her response by a deadline you set. Task: Write a direct approach e-mail to Ms. Marion Minter in which you ask her to speak at your club’s meeting. Format this document like an e-mail with a date and your return e-mail address, address it to [email protected], and include a Subject title. Remember: 1. Use the 3X3 Writing Process: Prewriting – Clarify your purpose, audience, tone; research for information; outline First Draft – In clear, plain, to-the-point language Revising – Editing & strengthening; Proofreading to catch errors 2. Demonstrate your writing business savvy with concise, direct language. 3. Eliminate any “flabby” language, empty words, redundancies, and long lead-ins. 4. Follow guidelines for communicating persuasively. 5. Always “maintain good cheer.”
