As noted in this chapter, students with disabilities receive a number of protections in the
discipline process. These same protections are not available to students without
disabilities (unless the school knew or should have known of the student’s disability and
had not yet identified the student). There is an ongoing debate about whether, and to
what extent, students with disabilities should be treated differently in terms of discipline.
