As described in this chapter, the U.S. healthcare system underwent a significant reform in2010. However, many people still oppose theplan. Many conservatives would like to repealthe plan and reinstitute a larger emphasis on theprivate market. Many liberals would like to seethe program amended to provide coverage foreveryone and reduce the profit-making sector inhealth care. Many would like to see a simplerconstruction of the system. Consider the following issues that occurred during the healthreform debate:1. Should the United States move to a system that truly provides universal healthinsurance coverage? What are the key arguments in favor and against?2. Should people who are in this country without immigration documentation and theirdependents be eligible for health insurancecoverage provided with public dollars? Whatare the key arguments in favor and against?3. Should the profit-making sector of thehealth care system be enhanced, maintainedas is, reduced, or eliminated? Why?4. Should the United States put a cap on drugprices to restrain costs? Given the extraordinarily high cost of many of the newer andfuture drugs, should the government prohibittheir production or refuse to pay for them?
