As an illustration of application of Eq. (5.4.4), consider the reduction in heat loss in a steel furnace by adding 10 cm of fiberglass insulation. The furnace is constructed of 1-cm-thick steel and operates at 800 ◦C (see Figure E5.5). For the purpose of this calculation, assume that the outside of the furnace (or the insulation) will be at 25 ◦C. Thermal properties are found in Table 5.1.
