As a nurse working in a family health clinic, you see a 40-year-old woman for a routine visit. During the visit, you update her family history. She informs you that she is concerned because her sister was just diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 42. Since her sister’s diagnosis, she has learned that one of her aunts (her father’s sister) died of breast cancer at the age of 45. Also, that aunt’s daughter, now 38, has a history of breast cancer. Her father’s mother died at an early age from cancer as well. She tells you that her father’s family has never wanted to talk about the family history of breast cancer; until recently, it was kept a secret. The woman asks you, “What does this mean for me?” How would you answer her question? What resources would you make available to her?
