As a generally optimistic people, most Americans like to view the nation's history as constantly moving towards progress. In other words, as time goes by generally things get better. Does the history of Appalachia over the 19th century tell a story of progress? Why or why not? Your response should detail some of the major historical developments in the region and assess whether this counts as progress.
