ARGUMENT AND PERSUASION ESSAY:Essay Five:Write a persuasive essay in which you express a deeply felt opinion about an ethical issue. Your goal is to have readers consider your opinion about your subject or your proposal for it. For example, you could write about whether or not the death penalty should be banned in the United States. You could write about whether or not the U.S should adopt a single-payer Medicare-for-All health care policy. You will be graded on how well your present your argument.Your thesis statement should clearly state your central claim, the main point of your argument.
Topic:Your essay must address an ethical issue. If you have trouble finding a topic, consult page 566 in the Bedford Reader.
Citing Sources:Be sure to provide parenthetical citations (footnotes) within the text plus a “Works Cited” page if your essay includes information from sources other than yourself. Follow MLA style documentation of sources as presented in the
Rules for Writersmanual. The manual provides a helpful sample research paper on pages 468-476. The Bedford Reader includes an "Appendix: Research and Documentation" (pp. 647-692) that also includes a sample research paper using MLA style documentation (pp. 670-676).
Length:500 words (two-pages typewritten,
double-spaced, preferably in Times New Roman font, 12-pt.) Do not use italics. The essay does not have to be exactly 500 words in length, but it should be close to that word count.
