Are these portrayed as normal, happy families or are they presented as objects of pity, people to be admired for overcoming great difficulties or as an unusual spectacle in contrast to ‘normal’ family life? What is likely to be the effect of these representations for viewers? How might they reinforce or distort preconceptions? How will they affect the self-image of children who come from non-traditional families?
