“Approximately 272 liters of water are required to grow one avocado” (Blythman, 2017). The avocado is one of the most and common sweet fruit in the world and it is similar in shape as pears; it is a wrinkly fruit with a dark green, leather looking outside and when we take its inside part, it is soft and creamy.
Indeed,
many people describe avocado as a “green gold” because of its biggest significance in health (Martinko, 2014). Avocados are grown in Mexico, and then followed by California, Florida and Hawaii. However, the
largest exporter of avocados is Mexico which 40% of the total cultivation take place on and specifically Jujucato and Lake Zirahuen regions in Mexico have the highest rate of avocado cultivation (Independent, 2016). Consumption in 2018 has risen to 47.63 million pounds a week, and they expect in 2019 to increase to 50 million pounds (statista, n.d). Furthermore, those who eat avocado their weight is less than those who don’t eat it. Due to the environmental, social, and health risks, individuals who consume avocados should reduce avocado intake.
The producing of avocados has a huge impact on the environment, such as deforestation and the reduction of water. Firstly, in terms of deforestation, production of this crop has resulted in a loss of trees. According to the Gira (2016), the deforestation is growing fast up to 2.5 percent per year, and the farmers cut down the pine to grow avocado trees and this results in a higher profit compared to pine trees (Julia, 2017). Deforestation is the clearing, destroying, or otherwise removal of trees through deliberate, natural or accidental means. For example, there are many risks caused by diverse animals and plants through logging, which the animals lose their shelter as the trees are the main protector of animals from the sun, trees regulate the temperature and when the trees are cut down the temperature results increasingly in causing global warming, the less of the tree means increase of the greenhouse gases. America is responsible for 20% of the oxygen (Pachamama Alliance, n.d). A further environmental issue is water consumption. 272 liters are used it for one piece of avocado (Blythman, 2017). Indeed, if we compare the water used in forests and avocado, we will find that avocados consume a lot of water more than forests, also to increase the production some farmers are used chemicals, which the chemicals have a negatively affect groundwater, making diseases rapidly spread (Independent, 2016). Trees also help water to regulate the water cycle in the atmosphere, which makes the land suitable for agriculture and with less tree the soil will be dry.
There are social problems related to the crime that may occur in the production of avocados. Firstly, one issue is theft. About 40 Avocado thefts occurred in New Zealand in one month (Ainge, 2016). As well as, in Mexico, three men stole $ 300,000 of avocados because in recent months the avocado productivity in Mexico and California has fallen and the price of avocados has risen because of increase of demand from other countries. They also sold the avocado box for $ 20 and $ 30, and that's a bit for the company as it sells avocados for $ 50 Alexander (2017). According to Alexander (2017), Mission Produce is the most export-oriented manufacturer of avocados in the world such as China, Canada, the Netherlands, and the US. These levels of thefts may lead to low income and increase in crimes. The second reason that may cause avocado's productivity is the issue of murder. Mexico exports about 1 million per a day and these avocados owners need this money to protect the country. According to Fisher & Taub (2018), Cour. L who studies Central American security issues at Noria Research, said that it is difficult to expel all the gangs from Michoacán,
but in Tancítaro the government have expelled everyone, since those farmers have contributed to cleaning the island. Farmers owners have had enough from the threat of deaths and the kidnapping of farmers that those gangs do every day. So, farmers have started in carrying weapons to protect them from the crimes that they see, since gangs are pushing farmers to pay taxes (Asmann, 2017).
Avocados a very healthy and nutritious fruit, although it may cause certain side effects to people who consume it on a regular basis. Firstly, the person who eats avocado frequently may affect it on the mouth sensitivity. The symptoms are inflammation, swelling and it may increase after a period of time to cover the full face and sometimes it may close the eyes, because the symptom is so severed, and it comes from inside the mouth in to the eyelids, and the last sign you may find difficult to swallow (Editorial, 2017). Also, if the person eats avocado with medications it causes bad health impact. There is more than one allergy can have an infect on the person. If a person continues to eat avocado health problem will appear such as rashes, shortness of breath, face redness. However, according to Renu (2017) that one of serious effect of eating avocados it can damage liver health, and the liver is your largest internal organ (Allen, 2017). About 22.5 gram of fat found in one avocado, avocados fat is useful, if people eat it regular the cholesterol in the body will be normal, but if it takes more than they need it will affect the body because it has a rich beta the (sitosterol) that absorbs necessary cholesterol from the body (Renu, 2017). According to Allen (2017), this vital organ carries out a myriad of functions, including converting food to energy, producing bile for digestion and remove wastes and poisons from the bloodstream.
In conclusion, a few years ago the avocado became popular and growing fast. This essay has argued that consumers must reduce consuming avocados due to the serious damage to the environment, in addition to social and health problems. The paper has shown that avocado production is causing deforestation and water pollution as well as, repeat of a consumption leads to liver damage. If avocado consumption continues this will lead, to the increase of destruction and will negatively impact the environment. Since there is an increase of damages it will affect the low demand of avocados as well as, a reduction for the farmer’s salaries. In addition, of the low economy for the countries. So, in my opinion there could be a possible solution in Florida for example, the state can expand the area of avocado cultivation because Florida has plenty of water and also the climate helps grow the product (Mansharamani, 2016). In fact, another solution could be that awareness must increase regards to sustainability and it is also good to have a responsible consumer in part of the problem as well. Moreover, the production of agriculture without chemicals is a proper solution, since it will result in a clean environment and pure air for humans, animals and all creatures in the earth.
