APA REFERENCING TOTAL WORD COUNT – 2250 MINI REFELECTIONS AND CAN BE WRITTEN IN FIRST PERSON. 250 words Over recent years there seems to have been a proliferation of educational resources/programs that purport to be 'brain based'. Browse the internet and find an educational resource that attempts associate itself with 'the brain' or 'brain research' or 'neuroscientific findings'. Now critique it - are the links/foundations sound or is there evidence of neuromyths/oversimplifications/misconceptions? 250 words Can you think of examples from your own experiences that might explain any uncomfortable feelings you have about your experiences in school? What can teachers do to ensure that their students feel positive about school? 250 words Many students (and adults for that matter) will argue that they can effectively multi-task (e.g., listen to music and study at the same time). Multi-tasking typically involves either a) dividing attention or b) the rapid switching of attention from one task to another or c) making use of skills/knowledge/processes that have been automated and so do not require much attention/working memory. What are your thoughts on the effectiveness of multi-tasking? Are you an effective multi-tasker? Is context important? 250 words Learning styles..... there is a great deal of intuitive appeal in the idea that people have preferred learning styles and a wide variety of frameworks/formulations of learning styles exist... some perhaps more useful (and better validated) than others. So... learning styles.... reductionist stereotyping or a valuable resource for teachers? You can include reflections/discussion of your own learning style(s) 250 words Puberty - it is fair to say that 'we have been there and done that' and have probably moved on from it a long time ago, but as a teacher, you are going to be surrounded by young people for whom this is a big deal. There is something of a paradox in our society to do with adolescence. Even though the trend seems to be that young people are starting puberty at younger ages, there also seems to be an "artifical extension of childhood" past puberty. Over the past century our society has tended to treat older and older people as children. For example, research from the USA suggests that laws that restrict the behaviour of young people are increasing and that teenagers in the USA are subjected to more than 10 times as many restrictions as mainstream adults and twice as many restrictions as acive-duty US Marines etc (Epstein, 2007). Compared to previous generations, many young people seem to be delaying the traditional markers of adulthood (moving out of home, financial independence, marriage etc) for more than a decade. Reflect on your passage to adulthood. When did others start taking you seriously as an 'adult?' Are young people being treated differently in Australia? 250 words Most people don't like being confused. It can be a frustrating and unsettling experience. It can sap our self-confidence. However confusion is likely to be encountered if we are operating in our ZPD (especially without much support). Share your experiences of being confused (maybe you were lost, or learning something difficult).... Were you successful in resolving your confusion? What steps did you take? As a teacher, how do you deal with confusion in your classroom? 250 words To what extent, and how, do educational institutions enhance young people's efforts to define themselves, or does traditional education actually interfere with identity development? 250 words As teachers, how can we genuinely motivate our students? What strategies might you use when facing really unmotivated students? 250 words Should classes be streamed based on student ability? We do it for sport... why not for academic subjects?

Brain Based Learning
The concept of brain-based learning has been dependent on the idea of neuroplasticity. The idea of neuroplasticity in association with learning and education in classroom is based on th
e idea that when young children begin to learn which happens at the level of neurons, after a period of time, it changes shape. Therefore, it is assumed that when the learners become expert in a certain field of study, the particular section of the brain that is associated with the specific study or skill grows accordingly. It has also been researched that neuroplasticity can be observed in the brains of bilinguals. Based on various researches it has been found out that in bilingual brains the left interior parietal cortex is larger in size in comparison to the monolinguals.
However, there are issues and myths in the arena of brain-based study. The research associated with brain-based study was first conducted on rats. Many researchers are therefore, of the opinion that it cannot be compared to the complex learning processes that are conducted through the means of classroom teaching. It has also been opined by a certain section of scientists that the size of the brain is in reality static. It develops no change in relation to learning and education in the classroom. It has also been opinionated that the concept of some people being left brained while some being right brained is also a complete myth as these are not really scientifically proven facts. Therefore, according to me, more research is required in order to know more about the effects of brain-based learning.
School Experiences
School experiences have a huge impact on the lives and perspectives of the learners. While good experiences encourage and motivate students, bad experiences demotivate them and remain etched in their memories for the longest time of their lives. As a student, I never really had any significant uncomfortable feelings regarding my experiences in school. Rather, I enjoyed going to school, meeting my friends, sharing our lunch, talking to each other, learning together, playing together and performing as a team. I even had a very close bond with my teachers, who loved me immensely for my demeanour and my classroom performance. They also praised me for my extracurricular skills time and again.
Teachers being the facilitators in classroom as well as in the school have a greatly significant role to play in ensuring that their students feel positively about their school. First and most importantly, every school ought to have a counsellor with whom the students are able to communicate without any restrictions. In addition to that, teachers can also engage in open and unbiased conversations with their students in order to get a deeper insight into their psyche. Being overtly professional in dealing with young learners can narrow the communication channel between students and teachers. Teachers should respect the cultural differences of the students and create a culturally safe environment where prejudices and discrimination are discouraged, and even punished. Students and teachers should engage in non-verbal communication, so that students can easily convey their discomfort to their teachers verbally as well as non-verbally.
Multitasking
Multitasking is a highly debatable topic as there are many concerns regarding the effectiveness of multitasking. While some argue that multitasking can stimulate the working process, others are of the opinion that multitasking significantly deteriorates performance. Neuropsychologists are of the opinion that when people think that they are multitasking, they are not doing so in reality. Rather they apply the skill of task switching or doing individual actions at a rapid pace and in succession. However, multitasking is dependent on the context to a great extent. For instance, smaller tasks such as folding laundry while watching television is an easy task to perform. However, studying while listening to music may not be an effective way of multitasking. This is because, in this example, the individual is simply switching concentration and attention from one task to the other or...
