How can one idea in the hands of some become a catastrophic evil (Mussolini, Nazis), also be something that is widely considered uplifting and good (pan-Africanism, Gandhi and the independence movement of India, the African National Congress of South Africa)? Or, you could argue that is a misconception: all forms of nationalism are bad.

  1. Can all democracies revert to authoritarianism? Give an example of what can bring a country to lose its democracy. You can answer the question from a historical perspective with a country that happened, or build a case for a hypothetical loss of democracy.

Nationalism is a double-edged sword as it can deliver blessings and unite the people or can be a blasphemy due to its disruptive nature. Nationalism has an impact on the emotional objective
s of the community. Nationalism is dualistic in nature where on one hand it can be progressive and benign and on the other hand it can be unreceptive and destructive (Spencer and Wollman). Korea is the best example of nationalism with respect to the past incidents and during the years of modern transformation. It was also used as a force of anti-colonialism and for the purpose of fast modernization. It is still an incident of pride and inspiration for the Korean people and serves as an ideology for unification of the divided Korea. Further, nationalism in Korea has been used as a weapon which helped to suppress the rights of the civilians and the freedom of the citizens (Mutuku). Yet Korea is still struggling with the transformation of national character which is reliant on the shared origin in a unified and independent character.

There were certain principles which were followed by the fascist rulers. These were seeking total control over the society where the people of the country will sacrifice their personal needs for serving the society. The state will be ruled by a dictator who will have charisma and an attractive character for gaining the support of the people. The labors and the factory owners will be controlled and directed by the dictator and fascist rules. Further, events such as strikes, lockout and unionism were considered as illegal. The fascist believed in taking strict actions and incorporating national myths for guidance instead of practicing barren intellectualism of knowledge and reasoning. Further, the fascists declared that the people of its nation are more superior than the people of other nations. They believed in unifying the dominant groups of the society and oppressing the minority groups. Finally, they believed in conquering and ruling the weak states and proved their supremacy through the military dominance during the wars (CRF, 2010). Hence, nationalism in the form of fascism became catastrophic evil in the countries like Italy and Germany due to the cruel dictatorship of Mussolini and Hitler.
On the contrary, the nationalism followed by Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela was promoting cultural peace and a contribution towards struggle for democracy internationally. It was Nelson...
