OUR IMPACT – What is it and what shall we do?

Biodiversity and Endangered Species. How does our impact effect the survival of other species, not to mentione ourselves? How can we sustainably co-exist? We can do this through being aware of our impact and planning that includes conservation and preservation.
Let's see your foot print at www.myfootprint.org …. What is it??? You can also try this link: http://www.carbonfootprint.com/ Which one 'grabs' your attention the most? Do these help you make other decisions?
Look up sustainability on the web on the USDA.gov or the DOE.gov.Also look up 'ecological design’ and'permaculture'. Something else wise to consider are the development of 'seed banks'. Whatcan you find out? Here is a link you may enjoy. You are welcome to find your own link as well. www.permaculture.org/
How can these ecological sustainable design systems help us make less of a foot print in our world?? What do you think?

How does our imprint impact species? Check out the Endangered Species Act. It was passed in 1973. Did you know that the main protective agency forendangered, threatened and dwindling species in the USAis the United States Fish and Wildlife Service? You can see them at http://www.fws.gov/What agency in your community helps with endangered species? Do they offer programs to the public?

Land Planning Principles Applied

As you may imagine, most of the population lives in or near urban centers and/or near many coastlines. There are many problems from the growth of cities as most (not all) cities are not well planned with sustainability in mind.
Review the "Problems Associated with Unplanned Urban Growth.” Select three of theten or so problem areas that concern your location (My location is El Paso Texas). Then, review the "Land Use Planning Principles".
What environmental or ecological solutions do you see for the area in which you live? If your area has a specialized concern, feel free to explore that too. Try to incorporate some support for plants and animals and the preservation of other natural resources(treed areas, free unoccupied spaces, clean water areas, vs. thelack of water, air and soil purity), as you seek to formulate an informal plan or scenario to put in place the elements of restoration of your area.
You can visitEPA Greenkit
or look up 'sustainability'for some additional ideas. These design ideas can be used in principle in most places. You can look up "green building" or "green builders". Resources are widely available.
How much land should be left as untouched or set aside out of the whole, do you suppose? How much of a percentage would it take to allow for the system to regenerate itself? Did you know that nature does best to regenerate itself inundisturbed areas? We need to keep a good portion of our communities free from negative human impact. If you look at the 'built' environment where you live (the roads, housing, commence, congestion) and then look atthe freeand green spaces, you should have an idea what kind of sprawl is happening and the probable consequences.
3)

How to build a backyard habitat!

Consider the wildlife in your region. Which wildlife species can you safely build a back yard habitat for?
Go to the National Wildlife Federation http://www.nwf.org/backyard/ and see how they suggest creating a wildlife habitat in your backyard, school or any other place you work or visit.
What are the elements necessary for a wildlife habitat? Whichhabitat do you like and why?
Are there any reforestation projects, especially nice preserves for endangered or threatened species or botanical collectionsin your locale? If so what are they?
How can you apply this to 'who' lives in your community? First, know your 'neighbors' and then see how you can enhance the 'neighborhood'!

Who and what make up the community?

All the populations and resourcesin ecosystems (not just humans) make up the system and the community.

To help you build a backyard habitat, answer the following:
How do wildlife and native plant populations expand in various habitats?Consider the vegetation patternwhere YOU live when you plan to build a habitat. How can we create a balance betweenwildlife, native plant speciesand human population growth and harmony? How can we best enhance this? Can we help endangered species? Here is a stunning site that discusses endangered species. Can we help? http://www.bagheera.com/

1)
OUR IMPACT – What is it and what shall we do?
Biodiversity and Endangered Species. How does our impact effect the
survival of other species, not to mentione ourselves?
Ans. Destruction of Habitats, pollution and various other human activities
are leading to extinctio
n of some precious wild life. Extinction refers to
disappearance of species. A species once lost cannot be retrieved. Therefore,
it would be unethical for man to be responsible for the destruction of a
species. The wildlife balances populations and maintains food chains and
natural cycles. Thus it preserves the environment as a self-sustaining
system. Once this equilibrium is disturbed it leads to many problems.
How can we sustainably co-exist? We can do this through being aware of
our impact and planning that includes conservation and preservation.
Ans. Conservation of living things is concerned with plats, animals and
microbes of the biosphere so that it may give maximum benefit to the
present as well as future generations. Efforts should be made to conserve
endangered, vulnerable and rare species. It is essential to maintain
important ecological processes and life supporting systems. A conservation
strategy should be made to preserve the diversity of species and the range
of genetic material found in the world’s organisms.

help you make other decisions?
Ans. (This question needs to be answered by you because using the above URl, you
need to calculate your ecological footprint and then decide the measures which you will
have to take to reduce pollution and reduce carbon foot print)

http://www.permaculture.org/
Ans. Permaculture is a branch of ecological design and ecological engineering which
develops sustainable human settlements and self-maintained agricultural systems
modeled from natural ecosystems. ermaculture is an ecological design system for
sustainability in all aspects of human endeavor. It teaches us how build natural homes,
grow our own food, restore diminished landscapes and ecosystems, catch rainwater,
build communities and much more. Permaculture draws from several disciplines
including organic farming, agroforestry, integrated farming, sustainable development,
and applied ecology.
How can these ecological sustainable design systems help us make less of a foot print
in our world?? What do you think?
Ans. Alteration in physical environment, interference in natural biotic communities and
injudicious use of organic and inorganic minerals by man has created ecological crisis.
This has endangered the survival of ma himself. Economic growth of a country depends
on increased production of agricultural and consumer goods. Higher agricultural and
industrial outputs result in environmental pollution and depletion of resources. Forests
are being cleared for agricultural and industrial activities. This upsets the ecological
balance and has adverse effects on organisms including man. Therefore, maintainence
of environment is essential for life.
