  1. What do you think the theme is for Citizen Kane? Support your answer with examples from the film.

With the answer you gave above in mind, some have said that the meaning of Kane’s final words, “Rosebud,” is just an excuse to set the plot in action (a McGuffin), with no real importance to the overall theme of the film. Do you think it has some symbolic significance in relation to the life of Charles Foster Kane, especially as it may relate to what you identified as the theme?

  3. Give one example where some aspect of the cinematic technique Welles and Toland used in the film helped underscore the theme you identified. Try to use a couple terms or concepts covered in your readings or the supplementalslides/handouts in the Film Basics tab to this point in your response. There are many you couldchoose from.
