11.Discuss the tendency of global organized crime groups to diversify into other illegitimate and legitimate markets. Summarize some of the broader economic , social and political consequences of the diversification of Mexican drug cartels in recent years. How does the movement of Mexican drug cartels into the oil business, as described in the video,
Cocaine and Crude, illustrate some of these tendencies and consequences.

2.2.Some of observers have argued that large scale criminal operations can have positive effects for economically weak countries including bringing in much needed foreign capital. Others, including the authors of some of your readings, have argued that once they reach a certain size, these criminal enterprises have extremely negative consequences for average citizens. Describe some of these negative consequences with particular reference to contemporary Mexico.

Consider several policies for the control of specific global criminal markets: value reduction, harm reduction, supply reduction (in the form of eradication of the sources of illegal drugs like heroin), and demand reduction (in the area of drugs, reducing the consumption of illicit narcotics).
